We like them for the vintage look of the fixtures, not for the light they give. These are a nice example of them.
My favorites are the ones with 4 bulbs in sort of a half-circle pattern and ornate end-caps.

Thats right Dan.....Fluorescent lighting was introducted in 1939, and became popular in the 40s in grocery stores...These are from the 60s. They are considered vintage......

You're Publix that they tore down was in really good condition to ours before they remodeled it. The fixtures in yours were not Southern Lighting. That's strange as I thought most stores used the same lighting in all the stores.
I remember the ceilings in ours was corrugated tiles and the metal strips were peeling and it was looking pretty bad. I believe ours still has some of the same shelves though that were in it from back then.

corrugated tiles? You mean the tiles the look like the ones in the pictures from the 1960s? I remember all the Publix stores in my area had all the same light fixtures and drop ceiling before they modernized them. The Publix stores from where you are from might have been a little older. What part of Florida? I noticed most Publix stores on the east side of I-95 were much older, alot of the ones that were west of I-95 were on built in the 80s...

Yes, both are considered drop ceilings.

There nice pictures, and the fluorescent lighting is neat. But it's not really retro looking. They look more fancy then retro. Allot of light fixtures that are made for drop ceilings or others, like the ones pictured just above (Troffer Light Fixtures) have been in production for over 30 years, and nothing has not really changed except for the shape in the metal casing, which cannot be seen because there hidden above the drop ceiling panels. Older ones are more square, newer ones are more triangle.
This type of drop ceiling also has been around since the 60s. Nothing has changed today....
My Light Fixtures that came out of the old Publix, are long out of production. I've seen some that are very similar in schools but in 4 feet form. They also had metal shades, and plastic side panels, and some that didn't have side panels. They were made to mount to any ceiling not to fit into drop ceiling....I have pictures somewhere. I'll be posting them too....

Yes, corrugated tiles like the ones in the pics. They were kind of ugly. And yes it was built in 1962, so it was pretty early and east of I-95. The one in the next town was built in 1984 and has flat white tiles and square lights with qray "egg crate" diffusers and square air vents. I don't know if I've ever been in one from the 90s.

Also Updated the pictures of one of the two fixtures that I rescued. I'm going to take pictures of both together once I fix the other. One of the ballast is bad as one bulb only lights. Also I need a spring socket which I just ordered..
Check it out...

Yeah great pics! On the pics where you have them on we can really see that ugly depressing greenish lighting effect. How come they use plugs cords to wired them? I am pretty sure that I have seen those old fluorescent bars with the triangle in the middle in Montreal.
