I think full-size three-light kits are incredibly tacky. With that said, my opinions as follows exclude them:
On any all-brown fan, a single looks best by far - whether a schoolhouse or globe is used is not important. If it has any brass on it at all, a four- or five-light kit is acceptable as long as it matches the brass. In my opinion, there's nothing more Texan than a large restaurant, dance hall, church, or otherwise, full of brown fans with bright single lights... want proof, head down to Gruene Hall in New Braunfels (also home of Schlitterbahn, the number one rated waterpark in the world, which also sports some ridiculously cool fans if you look hard enough).
For 52" fans in AB or PB - 5 lights if in the living room, 4 anywhere else (including restaurants). A single would work in a bedroom.
For a white fan, it really depends on the fan and the location, but I would never put a 5-lighter on it (if it also had bright brass, it might be acceptable).
Any fan 42" or smaller should use a single or a cluster, i.e. the shades attach directly to sockets on the switch housing. There are rare occasions where a full-size 4-lighter will work.

I did at the time when I was younger and until I moved we brought the fan with us and parents added a 5 light kit to it to make it pretty.

As a lot of y'all know, I enjoy putting various light kits on the fans in my collection. First of all, I agree with JW that the full size 3-light kits look tacky. There is an AB 5-bladed GE-Vent fan at my church that has one on it. Also, I think 3 (big or small) lights on a 4-bladed fan looks out of proportion. (A few of the 4-bladed fans I acquired had said light on them, so I immediately removed them) I think that an odd number of lights doesn't seem to compliment an even number of blades. But I do use the legendary 5-light kits on 4-bladed fans, though. I recently switched from a 5-light to a schoolhouse light on my PB footprint Litex

That's a nice fan, John. And Some Litex fans can do well with one light but most seem to prefer 4 or 5 lights.

Thanks, Farah. I did have a fancy 4-light kit on it, then a 5-tulip light kit, and now the schoolhouse light. Here is a pic of said fan with a more upscale light on it:

AH! your 5 blades Litex is a very good example of something that looks controversy for ceiling fans light kits. I always toughed that 5 blades fans should never have single fitter light kits. They do looks odd with them. For me a 5 blades fan should have spot lights, 3, 4 or 5 lights but not a single fitter. Its probably due to the fact that with more blades the better the fan looks with more lights. On a six blades fan its pretty much the same thing except for those littles 30'' or 32'' six blades fans that looks so good with mushroom lights kits. But with larger six blades fans(like Homesteads) put more lights on them. Noticed the Litex New Orleans 52''(sold at Lowe's) comes with 5 lights included with the fan. I also agree I would not put on a ALL white fan a 5 light kit fitter. But on a white & PB fan, Yes. But that's another thing when you have a ALL white fan, sometimes peoples put a PB fitter on the ALL white fan and it looks bad. And the worts thing is that some peoples will put a white fitter on a white & PB fan or will EVEN put a white fitter on a ALL PB fan. Please always tried to match the fitter finish with the fan finish. Brown fan= brown fitter(if possible) Brown & PB=PB fitter White fan=white fitter White & PB=PB fitter PB fan=PB fitter AB fan=AB fitter Are you talking about those long arms 3 lights fitters? www.farreys.com/i/ceiling_fans_westinghouse/light_kits_fitters/77171.jpgThey are rare and I do admit that your usually puzzled on what size of fan you should put it on it. Its 3 lights(more for a 42'' fan) but its long and large(more for a 52'') so I toughed that they would looks great on a 48'' fan. What do you think? Your Litex looks better with the four lights.

That's a nice light kit and it looks better on the Litex instead of the schoolhouse light.

Here is a pic of my California Zephyr (Yes, it is the exact one) with the full-size 3-light kit. My uncle never gave me the tacky light shown in the pic, so I'm on the hunt for either an AB Casa swithcap or the small Casa 4-arm fitter, as mentioned before. Once I get one of the aforementioned items, I will finally be able to hang it in my room. It is hanging in my aunt & uncle's kitchen before they redid it. They have a nickel Ventura with no light there now. BTW, In regards to the footprint Litex, I picked up a white 'Ellington Deluxe' with footprints last spring and it came standard with a 5-light kit. The fitter was white, mind you. It's one of the MANY fans I got last year, but I'll hang it as time permits.

why,my all 5 light kit looks good on my all white hunter infiniti(at least in my home) i do like the PB as well 5 lights on a Hunter Infinity?? No the Infinity is more a like a soft contemporary fan and if its ALL white I would not put a 5 lights kit fitter. The Infinity would looks better with spot lights. Especially if its a ALL white one. If it would have been a white & PB one or a AB or PB you could have put a more traditional light kit more similar to the one on Reed's Litex's. Is this your fan Jeremy? www.hunterfanhq.com/tools/sales/hunter/preseason/images/25286_lg.jpg
