Hmm... Another S.M.C. related fire? And you would think they are safer than the Aloha's and Litex sold at Walmart.
This is strange, these fans have a thermal cut off fuse that will blow whenever heat reaches 125° in the windings cutting electricity to it which will prevent any fire.
While the lost of their home and belongings is unfortunate, something else is wrong here... When A fire starts in a fan, the heat from the fire melts down the metal of the fan., the housings on this fan are intact aside from the burned section near the downrod.

Be sure to notice the irony that their house burns down and then the hotel they're staying in burns down... respond as you see fit. lol, I'm sorry, it is a terrible thing that happened, but really, you can't write stuff like that, its like something right out of The Simpsons. The only thing thats missing is Kent Brockman!

it could most probably be the explosion of the capacitor or it just got burned from overusage.. i've seen a fan with a burned capacitor that got on fire like this one

Return it and never look back! ..And if you are unable to return it, you can always kill it. I can't because I bought it through ebay and not at The Home Depot plus I think I've had it to long.
