I found out it's the bearings in the little motor.. I tapped on the shaft and the but of the motor, it freed up the motor alright, the shaft wiggles back and forth, pretty much tells me the bearings are knawed down to nothing.. I put the fan back together and it needs a good push start to get going and the motor is noticeably loud, runs for a few minutes before it comes to a stop.. It's not only friction drive technology these types of motors are used in.. Like I said, I've seen one in a old Bell and Howell movie projector, even with the little cooling blades on the shaft.. It's Not that easy to find a motor to fit, not every motor used in these types of appliances are the same size. Maybe too big, too small, or not a long enough shaft.. This particular motor is cheaply made, it doesn't even have screws to hold the motor together, it's bent metal that's part of the housing which holds the thing together..

I think I still have the motor from the 36" friction-drive I had years ago, the bearings in it are fine. I'll try to dig it up.

For the record, I believe you can still buy a replacement motor for these.. These motors are Universal Electric Co. which is this site located in Canada www.uem.ca/ I called the toll free number and gave the lady the model number and she gave me a replacement stock number and then told me to go to this site www.aosmithmotors.com/ and search for local distributors in your area, and you may want to bring the motor down to where you need to go.. I took apart this motor and the bearings pretty much fell to pieces.. The motor got so hot at one time that the little pieces and washers that go around the shaft broke into pieces, and the bearings can't be replaced in these motors due to the fact they are in a spingey compartment mounted to the motor housing..

Update: After the research and the numbers I called, I found a local company that will have a motor shipped to my address from Tennessee.. I gave them the info listed below that's on the motor label.. Universal Electric Co. Model JA2SO35N# 120 V, 60 HZ, 1.1 Amp, 1568 RPM, Thermally Protected They want a whopping $76 and change which includes the shipping.. At least we now know motors are still out there.. I forgot to mention, that is rain drops on the Hunter blades, it was sprinkling as I was taking the pictures.. I'll take Andrew's before I spend all this on a new motor..

Universal Electric Co. I've heard of them. I have a fan with a non friction drive motor made by them.

Btw your hunter is a designers choice, a glorified comfort breeze.

Yes.. It's missing screws so I can't take pictures of it until I find screws.. The Habitat had the blades in a different spot from the fan, to sell the blades separate from the fan and the screws were no where in sight..

Take the end bells to the a motor shop, I bet they can replace the bearings for cheap.

Nice scores, I hate when stuff like this happens with new fans. But looks like you'll get it running again one way or another.
The Excalibur is an ornate Comfort Breeze. The Designer's Choice I think is based off of an Original or It could be a model of its own.

Nice finds! Glad you've gotten some ideas on what to do with the Friction Drive motor; hope you can get it fixed/replaced. Love the Hunter as well.

I just received the motor that I ordered for $76.. The fan runs for about 15 or 20 mins then thermally shuts down.. Looked at the new motor and it's rated at 1.8 amps and the old one is rated at 1.1 amps.. The new motor gets hot and shuts down.. Looks like I'm going to have to take this back.. How did I know that there was going to be a problem with the new motor? I just knew it..

I wonder if the tension needs to be adjusted.

I figured out the problem.. The motor has three stages (high, Med, Low) I had the motor hooked up on the highest, and it was causing it to over heat.. I hooked it up to the medium lead, which the fan still goes the same speed, and now it doesn't over heat..
