I agree, the last generation of "Vortec's" had all if not most of the fancy stuff these Ecotec's had before the generation change like cylinder deactivation.
The 4.8 may go out eventually and probably be replaced using the 5.3 or 4.3 but the 6.0 isn't going anywhere. I know guys who will never change from that. Unlike Ford who changed everything to implement these Ecoboost engines in GM is very loyal as there are owners are as well with their engines.
I know Ford was the earliest automaker to start getting everything prepped for the new mileage standards... But with President Trump now in he may reverse those Cafe standards to something the auto industry, customers, and eco people may all be happier with instead of what the Obama Administration had implemented. Thats why you're seeing all of these Ecoboosts in the F-150's and in reality they aren't getting more then 1-2 MPG better then Ford's old 5.0 L that all of the die hards still buy but have to pay an arm and a leg for.
In reality, GM has the best setup, 4.3 for the work truck or guy who has a truck to haul stuff from Lowes, (Thats what I would get because its a smooth engine and one of the most reliable) then the 5.3 for most people whether you tow or not this is what the masses want, and the 6.2L for High Country's and stuff which are being bought more as a luxury car with a bed then a hauler. The 6.0 is terrific for hauling, towing, and everything IF you need it. I wouldn't want 12 MPG at the most. If GM had only put the 4.3 in the 2015+ Colorado, there would be one sitting in my driveway as we speak.
