1500s could be had with the 6.0/6.2. Anything smaller than the 5.3 is a waste of money. The 4.3 is a joke and the 4.8 is a watered down 5.3 Yes, they *did* make a 1500HD from 2001 until about 2005 or so, with the GMT800 (1999-2006) trucks, but NOT with the GMT900 (2007-2013) trucks, which NEVER offered a 6.0. The 5.3 is GM's most popular engine by far. They also had an 8.1 Big Block engine at one time, but it didn't stick around long. The 2006 Chevy Avalanche 2500 was the last truck to use that engine, I believe. Wrong

Ok maybe they did but you didn't see em very often. My favorite GM truck engine is either the Vortec 5300 from 1999-2006 or the older Vortec 5700.

So it looks like we'll be replacing one vehicle in the Family Fleet, and that's my dad's 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 4X4... with 215k it has its issues and has done its duty of 12 years... we're looking at a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V6 4X4 with 53k miles on the odometer and has all the options we want (large touch screen, GPS, leather, and premium sound). Now some may say that we're "downgrading" from a V8 to a V6, but the 4.7L V8 in my dad's current Jeep has 235 HP, and the 3.6L V6 we're looking at has 292 HP. We should have a new vehicle within the next month or so, and I can't wait. In other news, my dad bought a 2006 Ford F-350 Super Duty XL SuperCrew for his work with 270k on the odometer but a reworked engine and it has the 6.0L Powerstroke Turbodiesel V8 under the hood and its a beast. Didn't pay that much for it either.

Don't look at it as downgrading, the 3.6 is a apparently one of Chryslers best engines from what I've heard and I'm by no means a Chrysler person but I heard its a smooth and refined engine!

The 3.6 is the only good thing Chrysler has made since the 1st gen Neon.

I like the HEMI too, they're fast, but my dad drives a lot and we plan to use this a lot as a family so it makes sense to do that. I don't see it as downgrading either, it has the same power (more ,actually) than the old 4.7L V8 (it replaced both that and the terrible 37L V6) and it gets great fuel economy, especially with the 8-speed automatic. My dad initially had interest in the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6, but diesel prices are starting to go up once again and they take way more oil (a Jeep regularly takes about 5 quarts of oil, but a diesel takes more). Not to mention that it's hard to find one, especially used, in my area.

The GC we have now (well, my dad's GC WK anyways, mine's an older GC WJ) is an absolute piece of junk due to hard plastics, transmission noise, and uncomfortable seats, plus a malfunctioning nav radio that is on its way out, but the new ones (we test drove a 2011 back when we first thought of shopping for a new vehicle) are soooo nice... much better than the 2005-2010 ones... anything from 1993 until 2004 and then from 2011 until the present are great vehicles.

I recall hearing about a petition that had over a million people stating to not call this generation of the Cherokee a Cherokee. The Liberty name was tarnished as many had problems with them and the second generation did not at all compared to the first generation. They should have came up with a new name but not a Cherokee... Heres the thing too there is a want of many people WHO want a simple boxy SUV that isn't a crossover and not a fortune like a 4Runner. Jeep could do this, granted you could just get a Wrangler Unlimited with the hard top.. But the market IS out there.

Lets be honest, the true "Jeeps" died with the TJ. The new ones are nothing but glorified mall crawlers.

Lets be honest, the true "Jeeps" died with the TJ. The new ones are nothing but glorified mall crawlers. I agree and disagree, while the loyal Jeepers have a TJ or something older... I do feel the newer ones are still have the offroad capability but at the same time have expanded into a different market like Jeeps were after the Chrysler acquisition which is a yuppie car. I Can't tell you how many people I know who normally would have gone out and got a Mercedes C-Class or something went out and bought a Wrangler Unlimited. To me its like F-150's and Silverado's as well as other pickups.. They can be an offroad muddin' machine, something to work in, something to camp in, something to just drive, but at the same time can be more luxurious than a Cadillac. They just have spread the options out. Jeeps used to be a utility now they are a luxury and a heritage brand in the sense that your new "Cherokee" is comparable to a Ford Escape or Rav4 but with that off road tough reputation.. But the Wrangler still has the off road capability but then its like who really wants to take a vehicle thats $35k and beat the tar out of it off road... Not me thats for sure. People have asked me "You have a 4 wheel drive truck, so you must go off road and mud" and my response is that "No, I wouldn't take a truck that cost me $34,000 off road what so ever... I bought it to get me unstuck in my long driveway in the snow we get a million times a winter. Plus my other truck is 2WD and I hate when we get more than 5" of snow being stuck in the driveway and watching my Dad get right out with 4WD.

I still love the old 4.0L engines that they put in them from the late 1980s until 2006 when the last Wrangler TJ rolled off the assembly line... my '02 WJ Grand Cherokee has it and it's great... I don't like the new Cherokee but I still love the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee, and the Renegade is nice, too... they just unveiled a new Compass which is nice considering what type of vehicle it is.

I like the Patriot. I never drove one but sat in one at the auto show. I also like the Wrangler Unlimited. a friend of my fiance has one and she let me drive it, very nice vehicle. I would buy one of those if Chrysler didn't make Jeep. I know too many people who had Transmission problems to take the risk (No offense to anyone as I would really like one). I'm partial to Toyota and General Motors. My fiance briefly had a DODGE Dakota and that was not my favorite by any means, she owned it for about six months and we sold it to my cousin who loves it so it all worked out good in the end! My sister in laws Jeep continually reminds me as she's put a TON and I mean a TON of money into it. Thats a 2004 Grand Cherokee. That has a 4.0 I6 in it.

Yeah the 4.7 is terrible... the '99-'04 WJ body style Grand Cherokees are great when equipped with the 4.0 I6, but with the 4.7, it's not too great of a vehicle. We test-drove the 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6 yesterday (Monday), and we fell in love with it... seats are comfortable, 3.6 has a neat growl but has just enough power and gets great MPG... we're seriously considering adding it to our "fleet of vehicles", haha.

I do like the TJs better than the ones made today,, but they're not that far off.. Given how much driving I have to do,, I'll take the greater efficiency for now..
I can't speak from experience,, but I've heard that the new Cherokees do not have good ratings in reliability and build quality..
