well i was able to find a bearing puller and a new bearing to put in the fan myself. i got home installed the new bearing in the fan, put it all back together, installed it, only to find that the motor now makes a REALLY annoying hum. the fan spins fine now though, go figure. ive just about given up on this fan. i used the monty ward speed control on it so i know it cant be that because when i used it on the fan when it was brown, the fan was silent. im just bummed because i've invested so much time and money into this fan. what a shame, i really liked this fan too. if anyone wants it they can have it, five bucks if anyone else wants to work at it. i want to keep the speed control though. what does anyone think could have caused the hum?? remember it diddnt do it before it was painted, it DOES spin good now, and i know i wired it right.

When you rotate the motor by hand, do you feel anything rubbing?

not that i can feel by hand, im going to take it apart again and inspect it more thoroughly, do capacitors make hums too or is that just a motor thing?

thats usually caused by the motor not tightly put together, but usually does not spin either. When putting the motor back together usually I need to take a hammer and bang on the top part of the motor,
usually after tightening the screws as far far as i can, usually the motor doesn't spin freely so thats where the hammer comes in, I bang on the top part of the motor until spins freely, then I tighten the screws more, sometimes I have to hammer the motor over and over again..

That is exactly whats happening, i found that if i just hand tighten the screws but not all the way, the motor will still spin, but once i get the screws cranked down all the way it barely spins at all. you say i should hit the top part, anywhere else i should hit too? ill use a rubber mallet of course. have you figured out why that happens?

it's hard to explain, Yes you have to use a hammer or a mallet, just tightening the screws is not enough. there is two half's of the motor shell as you can tell, and they both have to aligned perfect on the bearings after tightening, even after you got the screws as tight as can be, you still might have to hit the motor, to Aline the full motor shell to where nothing inside is rubbing while spinning, What is happening is the motor itself (Where the windings are) are actually touching the inner part of the shell itself, causing a hum and not to spin freely.
if you notice, the motor might spin freely till it hits the shell.
if you would have waited, I could have showed you. You can still bring the fan over if you want...

I would still like to bring it to you and show you my work and maybe we can hook it up and see how it works and if its quiet now. i have it all put back together, screws tightened all the way and i gave it a few good hits with the mallet and it seems to spin fine now by hand. i havent tried it out yet though, i can wait for when i bring it by and we can try it out then. should i bring my wall control for it or would you want to use one of yours to try it out? Wednesday is still good for me.

Why not try it out if it seems like it's working now?
