Well I was able to put the innards of the old switch into the new switch!
unfortunately due to the slight misfit of the round disc inside the pull switch I can only get 2 of the three speeds.
I messed around with cleaning the contacts and trying to get the switch to make better contact on all three positions but to no avail.
I'm willing to take a fan with Lo and Hi speeds rather than keep trying to mess with it. But rebuilding the switch is the way to go if you can't find a new one wired correctly.
thanks for all your help
let me know if you want to get more of a description on switch rebuilding.

Forget that... the switch innards replacement failed... I think because the square peg which turns the switch when the chain is pulled didn't fit well into the mating part....
in any case the final solution was blind luck...
my wife bought a "new in box" ceiling fan at a garage sale for $15 we were gonna replace our Tatung with this cheapo Wal Mart fan which was originally purchased in '93 (the guy still had the receipt in the box!).
on a lark I pulled out the pull chain switch and opened it up... amazingly it was wired the exact same way as my Tatung switch! I installed it in the CF-AM36 and it worked perfectly. So I have my original fan back in service AND a new in box fan without a switch!
if anybody needs it let me know and I'll ship it to you for the cost of shipping.

Lasko? Wal-Mart DID sell some interesting fans then, it's the late 90s when they started selling the boring fans.

it looks like the old switch and the new collar might be holding! jack Did it hold? If not you'll have to look for a replacement. Your switch does not appear to be fairly common. This is the pattern: 1+2+3, 2+3, 1+3 In other words, on High it connects L to 1, 2, and 3. On Medium, L connects to 2 and 3. On low, 1 and 3.
