Hello everyone,
Newbie here. I figured this was the place to ask on advice on buying a new fan for our vacation house. It's going to replace a Concord builder fan from the early '90s, which is simply too weak for this size room. The room has about a 14-foot cathedral ceiling (can't measure it at the moment, unfortunately), and is about 250 square feet. The fan will have to fit between about 7 feet of width total (an estimate, once again). Budget is about $700, and a light is not needed. The control system doesn't make a huge difference as long as it's easy to figure out for guests and not glitchy. The house's decor could best be called contemporary.
I've thought about the Haiku L, but looking at its CFM rating, it doesn't seem that much more powerful than lower-priced "modern/contemporary" fans. Maybe the Emerson "heat fan" or Fanimation Drone?
Thank you! - kestrel

If you can find one, I'd recommend a Fasco Great Room... its 56" blade span and intricate detailing would look great in a room like you describe.

In the meantime, does anyone have any feedback on the Fanimation "Big Island" or Minka Aire "Great Room" (no relation to the Fasco), both of which claim over 10,000 CFM?

The Fanimation DC motor is great (no feedback on the Minka Aire)... if you're going to go new, go with either that or an Emerson fan with their DC EcoMotor... we have an Emerson Midway DC ECO and love it!

The Minka Aire DC motor is great as well, so if you can find a large DC motor Fanimation or Minka Aire, then that's where I'd go. Emerson's EcoMotor series, as Vince said, is amazing as well. If you are into more of a traditional style and still want plenty of customization options and a mighty powerful fan, look at Gulf Coast's mix and match line of fans.

From that, I'd suggest nothing bigger than a 52" size. There's plenty available.

I did take some measurements, and unfortunately, I agree that nothing too much larger than 52" will fit. Part of this is because the junction box is not centered for some reason. How much do you think an electrician would charge to move the box a few feet along the beam and fix the plaster at the original location?

Quite possibly... but there'd have to be a wooden joist to attach the box to... thus why it was probably mounted there in the first place.

Or the junction box would have had to be mounted between two joists on a "Saf-T-Brace", but given the age of the fan and when that technique of mounting junction boxes became mainstream, that is highly unlikely.

Thanks! I guess it'll be best just to use the existing box and stick with something about the same size. The blades should be at least 1.5 feet from the closest wall, correct?

So I think we're going to go with the Fanimation Blitz. The only thing holding us up is the sheer co$$$$$t of having it installed. Every electrician wants $500-$1000; people on Thumbtack advertise for cheap and clearly don't read the note that the ceiling is 18' or so high, and scurry away when reminded of this fact. Ugh.
Maybe we should just rent a huge ladder?
Edit: we've gotten some more reasonable quotes today; let's see what happens.
