Well, here I am with the 3rd annual "best and worst fans of 2017". These threads look at the coolest and ugliest new designs of each year, and critique them, just FYI.

I'm gonna kick things off with one of the coolest designs I have seen of yet; actually I found out about it today, and it's by Modern Fan Co. who already has some really cool designs as of yet. But their newest fan series deserves mention. The fans are called the IC/air 2 and IC/air 3 respectively, essentially 2 and 3-blade variants of the same design. They both feature DC motors, as is probably obvious by their designs, and are constructed from Die-cast aluminum (as is typical for their fans)...and both of them seem to be impressive air movers, even for their 56" blade span. The 3-blade variant is rated at 6,374 CFM on full blast, and the 2-blade variant is rated at an even-better 7,151 CFM. Yes! I learned of these about two months ago, I've been very excited to see more of the images emerge. These DC motor minimalist designs are popping up from everybody, the Haiku's popularity cannot be denied and it's made ripples across the industry. This one was particularly interesting to me since it involves a new designer to Modern Fan's repertoire, the same one who did Ventilador Spirit in the Brazilian market. I see a similar influence in these fans, albeit more refined for sure.
I'm sure it'll be covered, but Fanimation's Drone is in the same general wheelhouse, and it's maybe my favorite fan to come from anybody this year. But Hunter, Kichler, Emerson, and Casablanca have a few design-wise that I really love as well. Hunter, particularly, is on it this year.

Agreed...I checked out the Ventilador Spirit and I can definitely see the uncanny resemblance. As for the Drone, you know it will be covered! But this IC/air series is quite possibly the coolest recent design out of Modern Fan Co., in my opinion, since the Velo, Pensi, and Torsion came out between 2015-2016, the first two of which are K55-types; links to those: Velo- modernfan.com/fan/velo/Pensi- modernfan.com/fan/pensi/Torsion- modernfan.com/fan/torsion/

Woah. That might be the most weirdly cool, or cooly weird Haiku-inspired fan yet.
Like Cole, my favorite is the Drone. It takes everything good about the Haiku and improves on the bad.

ATT'N DAN AND COLE Next to be mentioned here is, you guessed it, the Drone. Probably the coolest fan that has come out this year, as far as industrialized designs go, and definitely the favorite of all of us including myself. Performance from it is indeed beastly for its size (60"), and as Dan said, it does emphasize the good of Haiku-inspired fans and removes the bad. And costs half as much. Gosh, I don't even keep track of the new fans anymore, I used to make my own thread about it as well, LOL Many of Hunter's new designs are awesome (I like the Hunter Hepburn because it's a classically-styled (BRASS!!!) ceiling fan with a big, round globe in the middle). My "All-Time-Favorite Fan of 2017" is, hands down, the Faniamtion Drone, I'd buy it over a Haiku for sure. I HATE companies that just take the same model and modify it ever so slightly and rename it, so you could say I think most of HB's (Harbor Breeze and Hampton Bay's/Home Decorator's Collection's) fans are on my "Worst Fans of 2017" list.

Silver Drone is my fave, I'm always drawn to the most 'unique' or 'weird' finish option. It looks amazing in every finish, though.

I do. It's very striking in black. Chrome would be amazing but impractical.

I like the glossy white Drone the best. The Drone wouldn't look out of place in an Apple store IMO.

I'd pick black or white for my Drone... it and the Haiku remind me of the black and white industrials of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Well, not everything this year was exemplary. Emerson's releases and changes for the 2017 year have been relatively modest, and while some were good, others were...mediocre. This one is likely the worst of them...it's called the "Euclid". It's not a bad looking fan, it's just proportionally awkward, with the heavily tapered blades that are very narrow at the tips and very wide as you go down; these look a bit large for the motor housing...very similar in design to some of the stuff Hunter has been coming out with as of late. However, it's performance is also very "lukewarm" even for a 56" fan; rated at 5,566 CFM. What's especially sad is that this thing has a large 188×25mm motor that it takes little advantage of. Not to mention that even though the price is still a question here, this thing likely won't sell for cheap. Pic:

If I'm in a minority here, so be it, but I really like the design of the Euclid. I like the design of the Ideal more, but I felt there were some distinctly 90s Emerson vibes coming from this one with all the geometric forms. I wasn't blown away by the specs either, normally Emerson is so good with optimizing their fans. The price seems to be $279 from the retailers that have them listed, which like the Keane I think is a fair price for a nicely designed fan that moves ok air. It's still a lot of money, but definitely on the lower end for Emerson.
