I found a vintage ceiling fan on craigslist. From the nameplate, it's a Hunter 23531, made in Taiwan, dated 2/86. Next I googled this specific fan to find some info on it. Found nothing except a link to your site. One of your members has a Hunter 23531, made in Taiwan, dated 1988. Therefore I GUESS its OK to purchase it. Do you have a list of what Hunters are considered OK to purchase? Or a list of what to avoid? So USA and Taiwan are good, but China is not? What about a date cutoff point? What criteria should I be using? -Ken

It's not really about where the fan is made, it's more about when. Hunter has taken a turn for the worse recently. More and more models are using underpowered motors that don't move much air, and frankly the build quality has just slipped. There is no specific date cutoff, but in general, the more recent you get, the fewer good models there are. There are still SOME quality fans available today, but nowhere near as many as there used to be. 23531 is a Hunter Comfort Breeze, which is a decent fan.
BTW, just because a collector has a fan doesn't mean that it's quality. People will sometimes collect fans for sentimental reasons, or if they're rare/interesting looking. If you're wondering whether a specific fan is any good, your best bet if to just ask here like you did this time.

like what sam s said about the collector has a ceiling fan doesnt mean it's quality>>i got emerson friction drives dated in late 70s/early 80s,they are poor quality but i love them only for looks and childhood memories since me and my brother had one in our bedrooms back in 1989 and my great aunt/uncle had 2 of them in their bedrooms back in the 80s and see them in various places when i was a kid...(now i got like 4+ of those in my collection)...

If it's a Hunter from February 1986 chances are it's a decent product. Even the US made Originals had parts manufactured in Taiwan.

There is no specific date cutoff, but in general, the more recent you get, the fewer good models there are. Personally, I'd say Hunter began to rapidly decrease in quality around 2006 or so. That isn't to say that there were low-end Hunter fans prior to that point, however.

Thanks! From now on that the way I'll do it. Still need 5-6 fans. So "I'll be back" -Ken If you want high quality pre-1995 ceiling fans, go with some nice vintage fans from Casablanca or Emerson. Homestead also had beautiful fans at the time (they are no longer in existence). If you want something newer and good, go Emerson or fanimation.

Thanks! From now on that the way I'll do it. Still need 5-6 fans. So "I'll be back" -Ken To give an example of what Sam had stated earlier, Dan likes southern fan co. Tara fans a lot. They were very good, however, there were better products from other brands. And while most of the higher quality fans were made domestically, there are some Taiwanese and Chinese products that are of good quality, primarily the high-end new fans.
