I wish I had a Menards where I lived. Of the homecenters we have, I like EXPO the best even though it is owned by Home Depot. Their fan section is not that large, but they have some really cool Fanimations on Display as well as quite a few Casablancas.

They are not here where I live neither and never heard of them till now, but sounds like a rapid growing chain, and the prices are better then Home Depot and Lowes, Sounds like they could become as big if not bigger than the Home Depot chain..

Menard's have 8-brands of ceiling fans that are already imported by a 3rd party company., in other words, Menard's have no control over the quality and selection of fans they
get from their specific suppliers., they have no options, their case is take it or leave it.
But Home Depot is different, the Hampton Bay brand search directly from the manufacturers in Asia, in the same factories that may supply fans to the importers that supply the fans Menard's carry.
Plus they have veto power over quality and have reach exclusive deals with King of Fans, Minka Aire, CEI, Spectrum Creations and Craftmade., and on top of that they have a design partnership with the designer teams that also work for the Minka Group.
Home Depot does not carry 2-brands, they have a total of 8, 6-for ceiling fans and 2-for portable fans. Taking in consideration Homer, LLC {parent company of Home Depot and Expo} does business under 2-names., The other is the upscale showroom chain, Expo Design which carry Fanimation, Minka Aire, Casablanca, Spectrum Creations, Exclusive Hunter models, and of course Hampton Bay.
These are the top U.S. Home Improvement retailers as in January 5th 2004 rated in product availability, prices, annual sales from the previous fiscal year and of course customer satisfaction. 12,075 customers from the Northeast,
Southeast, Center, East and West coast participated on this
survey for CNBC and the Dow Jones Financial. {newspaper}
1-Home Depot 2-Lowe's 3-Wal-Mart Super Center 4-ACE Hardware {not the individually owned stores} 5-Menard's
This list hasn't change in nearly 2-years. Only in late October 2002 Menard's was one position up but dropped back to 5th in February 2003. If Menard's doesn't wake up and smell the flow of money {broker's language} the big boys are going to run over them.

If Menard's wants to compete they will have to open at least 800-more stores. and not everywhere, but in top key markets like New York, Charlotte, Miami, Orlando, Dallas, El Paso, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Franscisco.
They'll also have to expand internationally, go up north and south of the border., Japan., South Korea, Hong kong., the U.S territories outside the mainland. They should play all their cards before Home Depot makes their move.
All these countries i mention above already have Home Depot. Japan alone have 236 stores.

...I forgot Atlanta, Houston and Las Vegas.
Home Depot is not only forcing hardwares and small chains out of business but lumberyards, nurseries, and fan and lighting stores.
Just 2-months ago the "FANtastic A-to-Z" {fan store} close it's doors after 40-years in the ceiling fan business thanks to Expo which was established 2-years ago across the mini mall where the store was.
Of course Expo wasn't 100% responsable for their dissapearance, the owner and employees {his sons} threated the customers like crap, plus their prices were thru the roof.

Menards is based in the Midwest, and they plan to stay in the midwest. One thing that Menards has that HomoDepot dosn't have is IPS, or Instant profit Sharing. So at the end of the year I get a 800.00+ Check for selling stuff! Plus the 50.00+ X-mas bonus credit. I really dont care much about this topic, infact all I care about is getting money. Im not planning on working there for the rest of my life, eventually this summer I will be getting a job at the local Chryco dealer. I never buy anything there except candy and Jerky sticks. Also I have some REALLY SUPER HOT coworkers, one being my Gf . I dont care for the Homosexual Depot nor do I care about lowes. I really dont care about anything that they sell there because I only buy used materials at the ReUse center. They are like a homecenter for used building materials. I prefer to recycle and not support evil companys. And Perrey, I was born on Sepetember 2, 1985BTW, me and some buddies stole six shopping carts from HD and now they are used at the junkyard where I work bi-weekly. All I know is that Perrey loves to HD, You have probabily never been to Menards.

One other thing........ People dont care about all that financial importing junk. They just want to pay the least amount possible. Only if some business would realize that............ www.homedepotsucks.com

How long have you been working in that company?, cause you were born in September 16th? of 1986. and by labor laws companies in the U.S. cannot hire any potential employees under 17. and if my calculation are correct you're still 17... Anyway my point was Orange's business strategy in your location. Menard's might be winning on your areas but for how long can Menard's battle against Home Depot with only 180 stores based only in the northeast? This is an old report about how Home Depot drives the competition out of business. Which is what i was writing about in the first place. www.sprawl-busters.com/hometown.htmlI looked over that site, and it's really very sad that Home Depot is putting so many other retailers out of business. We like convenience, but we also like selection, and selection of different places to shop is part of that. I'd hate to be forced to shop at Home Depot because it was the only place. I seem to recall going to Menards with my dad at age 15 or so and seeing girls seemedly my age working the cashiers. I asked my dad about it, and he said that since they were located outside of the city limits of Madison (then, now Madison has expanded and they're in the middle of the west side) they could hire younger people so long as they only worked in front . . . something like that . . . in any case, it gave me two things to look at when I went there, the fans, and the . . .

In response, to Andrew, and to Adam . . .
Menards is, as Matthew says, based in the Midwest, and to my knowledge, all their stores are here. They are expanding but as far as I know not outside the Midwest. That means they arent able to give Home Depot any real competition on a corperate level, only on a local consumer-choice level.
And, tangent, it seems to me that Menards attracts a slightly different crowd than Home Depot. Home Depot grabs the homeowners who really dont know what they're doing but are willing to give it a try and "do it yourself", whereas Menards I see more "big project" types such as myself, go in there and grab an ass-load of lumber and supplies.

I could be wrong, but it seems as though Menards has had veto-power over what they carry. Not all of their lines are from the same source, in fact in recent years they carried a number of American-made fans in addition to the steady flow of imports. As of late, however, their quality and selection has declined, and it's mostly Hunter and Westinghouse products.

We have a few other regional chains. Brunsell, Blain's Fleet Farm, Marling Homeworks (I think they're only in Madison), and UBC/Fish Building Supply. Actually, I dont know if UBC is regional, but Fish was. That was the lumberyard with the Tara! Anyhow, all those are more upscale lumberyards were true carpenters and contractors would buy quality product, not the warped sh*t you get from Home Centers. That's one thing about both Menards and Home Depot: you still get what you pay for, for example you have to wade through a sea of warped knotty lumber.

I haven't been to Lowe's yet but I'll check out fan selections as soon as possible. ;D I also have a Lowes near me. Lowe's fan selection SUCKS . The one near me doesn't have a single fan hooked up and they have crap hanging from the ceiling. But I did manage to get a hunter newport display model for a bargain. It was a display model and it was half off. This one has the remote control and four lights. It was only up for about a month and then it was discontinued and I got the last one. I've only seen another one on eBay. In other words, the only advantage of Lowes is that they sell their display models, unlike home depot who throws them all away.

The Lowes I went to, they ahd a large display of fans running, much larger than the Home Depot across the way. I suppose it varies by store.
