I have an older Casablanca Trident ceiling fan with a Versa-Touch receiver known to be very sensitive to power surges. Casablanca recommends wiring in a varistor (MOV) to protect the receiver. Owners with Versa Touch controlled fans without varistors too often report blown-out receivers. I have a varistor wired to mine and so far have been okay. To ensure continuing protection, MOVs need to be replaced every few years. I figure I should just stock up and have them on hand, marking my calendar for periodic replacement. My question is, what's the best varistor to use? I could buy Casablanca's overpriced varistor, but I'm not even sure if it provides the best protection. Some recommend thermally protected or fused MOVs since MOVs have been known to overheat and occasionally catch on fire. Would this one do the trick? Or should I stay with a more garden variety MOV? Spec sheet here.
