Run it without the motor housing so you can better see where the smoke is originating from.

all the dust in it burning since motor gets that hot(?)

I over soaked the motor with oil.. After running it on high for a while, it threw oil all over.. Some of it is on the circuitry of the variable speed system.. After running it on low for a while, heat sink/transistor heats up and starts burning the oil.. The smoke doesn't have much of a smell to it, other than an oily smeel.. It doesn't have that nasty odor of burning circuitry..
I suppose tomorrow I'll open it up and clean it seeing how there is even parts of the old flywheel inside it..

The resistors get really freaking hot on all Fascos. Varilow is slower even on the highest setting because there is a resistor in there with a lower value than medium on a charleston. It gets REALLY hot and if a lot of oil got on it, it would get hot enough to smoke it. I say keep running it, I wouldn't even bother taking it apart.

I always remove the top housing and sideband, and leave the bottom attached. Much easier.
