I'm... just gonna let you all decide for yourselves for this one.

1) Most are under-powered. 2) The majority of them use MDF blades, and are made from cheap materials and labor. 3) They're now built with wattage limiters and candelabra sockets. Thanks, George W. Bush. -_-

The finish selection has got to be the most deceiving part. The finish selection is very ugly and disappointing.

Many new fans are designed to rum very fast (7x7 or 6x6 windings), but use bigger blades which the motor cant handle to run at that speed, resulting in motor overheating and quick damage
Lots of fans nowadays have very narrow blades that barely do anything
Underpowered motors
Some models are super cheap clones of other fans (typically clones of SMC, sanyo, USHA, xrompton greaves high breeze, matsushita fans...)

That last point is kind of interesting... considering that most of the fans I've seen you talk about look hilariously similar... (not that they're any bad...)

Here's something I haven't seen yet...
...the fact that most fans are now made in China (or some other sub-first world nation), instead of the good old U.S. of A (or wherever the fans were marketed to)

If everything was made in the USA today, Alot of stuff would probably be no different then the junk made in China...

The finish selection is very ugly and disappointing. Why? I don't mind nickel and bronze finishes. It is a shame to see brass disappear though.

There are all kinds of things wrong that have been said, I just have to agree with Jean on finish selection. The 90s were the best years for abundances of really innovative finishes offered alongside most of the traditional options. These days you see white, AB, BN, and some kind of bronze and that's the basic finish lineup for almost every single company. There's no diversity, there's no innovation. The best thing Casablanca did this year was introduce those two new finishes on the Stealth, but they should've been on the Panama instead and kept glossy black for the Stealth IMO. That's all aside from the redesigns, downgrades, etc. though.

It is a shame to see brass disappear though. Exactly, that's all it revolves around today: white, brushed nickel and bronze. It's very boring and ugly.

True, AB isn't offered on almost every model like it used to be, but pretty much all of the major companies have it on more than one fan in their lineup so I'd call that pretty good considering I thought that finish would go out of fashion before PB. It's still one of the major finishes out there.

Tell me about it seems the designers want it dead, at least proper lighting show rooms still carry brass lights, this hard to find of brass is really bad if you house is an older house, where only brass lights are appropriate or if you want to get lights for a more traditional church as brass is the only fish that really works in them either

You're talking to a nickel finish lover, LOL! I have mostly nickel finish fans in my house, and I don't find it boring or ugly. Nickel finish fans with cherry or rosewood blades are quite nice looking in my opinion. Needless to say though, I do love brass and it does suck that it's getting less and less common.

I miss the loss of chrome. It's hard to find that finish anymore especially on the fans I would like to see it on instead of brushed nickel. Don't get me wrong, I have a brushed nickel panama and love it but I miss chrome.
