Let's compile a list of the earliest commonly imported fans and the confirmed earliest occurences.
PLEASE differentiate what is a theory, versus a confirmed fact. If you post it as a fact, please be prepared to back it up.
Here are the ones I know:
SMC: 50s? 60s? I do not have confirmed data but believe these to be the earliest commonly occuring.
Banvil/Envirofan: 1974 in Canada, 1976 in US. Confirmed by CEO of Envirofan
Marley/Dayton/Westinghouse/Hi-Tech: 1976 as confirmed on a photograph found on eBay
Moss/Caribbean Breeze: 1979?

I forgot about Sanyo and Lasko. I can confirm those date back to 1978, I suspect it's actually earlier if I could find that Google patent again.
TAT is good in theory but I'd love to find some hard evidence.

hmm, in UAE's case, the most common fans sold back then were SMCs, KDKs, Unions, USHAs, orients, and various british brands

Not sure this is relevant.. but I have a USHA industrial...and I have absolutely no idea how it found itself in the US.

i guess the CG fans are there since 70s, i have seen different versions of that CG fan, one that was placed in a building built in 1982, the canopies were different, downrod was thinner and the 2 rings on the motor were dark green, not copperish..

Not sure this is relevant.. but I have a USHA industrial...and I have absolutely no idea how it found itself in the US. Like I said before it might have been brought by people from India and they donate it to an economy store because they realized it didn't worked with the local voltage. Do you have a voltage transformer to try it? |

I didn't know they were SMC's commonly sold in the United States before the late 1970's. I know in Canada Wilcorp in Toronto started to import their ceiling fans in 1965. Their site used to be more detailed about this with old pictures but they have changed their site recently. These old SMC 60F are still seen installed in and there and a few shows up on Kijiji from time to time. They seem to be related to Mitsubishi. |

The USA definitely imported ceiling fans well before the 1980s, they were three metal bladed ceiling fans, as far as whom. That's a mystery.. I never come across anything that's before the late 1970s..
I do recall the fans I saw that looked old back in the 80s.. They looked like huge Golden Fans, at least that's what the motors looked like without a nut, but that's not saying they were Golden Fans..

So it actually had a regular bell canopy, not a SMC canopy? Yes, it's pretty much the same story with these old SMC's. That's also what Wilcorp site says. |
