I just spent the last 6 or 7 hours trying to learn about ceiling fan design and technology and am now somewhat comfortable due to this internet link www.conservapedia.com/Ceiling_fanConsequently I called and spent 20 minutes on the phone with Casablanca tech support manager to find the lowest cost fan that used their modern quiet design motors and we came up with the Casablanca Vector which is a privately labeled Casablanca sold by LampsPlus.com Still the fan costs $299 without a light kit. Isnt there a less expensive fan out there if I am willing to sacrifice on the aesthetics and fancy design and still get a good lifetime quiet motor ? The reason why I am doing this is I was spoiled by a Fasco ceiling fan I bought in 1979 or 1980 and had been running it up until about 2007 when I sold the house. Little did I know then that I should have taken the fan with me. I am tired of the HomeDepot fans that have the hum drum drum drone all night long. Basically Casablanca said all the direct drive motors are going to make noise from every manufacturer and all the cheaper fans sold by HomeDept and Lowes he said use the direct drive motors. here are what are said to be today's major mfgrs Casablanca Emerson Hunter Craftmade Monte Carlo Regency Do any of them have some hi quality plain-jane models at a lower cost ? I have some old Hunter models but I need lights in the rooms I want to hang them in. Scott in Atlanta

Modern Hunters are pretty good, or you can add lights to the older Hunter, there should be wires coming out of the bottom of the fan when you remove the bottom cap. The wires will be black and blue. Just follow instructions in the light kit you buy's owners manual. (:

You could very easily add some light kits to the Hunters you have I imagine like Vincent said, pretty much all of their fans are light kit adaptable (or had one included/integrated). Would be very low cost to get some decent lights and use what you have. The wires in the switch housing will most likely be labeled for use with a light, but they will not be black and blue. One will be white, and the other will be black with a white line on it (which continues up through the fan to the connections at the ceiling).
As far as new, Hunter's are the best you can buy on a budget these days. If you want the real quality in the motor, you want to go with a model that uses the XLP-2000 from Casablanca (like the Vector), or a variant of the K55 from Emerson. You can get fans from both companies far below retail by not going through showrooms and fan specialty companies direct, brand new fans can go for less than $200 on eBay. Valuebrothers on eBay is a VERY good and, more importantly, reputable distributor for a lot of Casablanca fans, you can get all sorts of models, with included blades so you don't have to purchase separately, for bargain prices you will not find anywhere else.
