Hi everyone, I'm from Singapore and I'm fascinated with what you guys call industrial ceiling fans. I especially like ceiling fans that were manufactured prior to the mid 80s. heres a link to a gallery of old ceiling fans you may find here. if anyone has seen them or is familiar with these brands and models, do give me a holler! sg.f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/cheongmw/my_photosi shall be updating the gallery from time to time so do feel free to pop down and check.

Anyway in case no one has heard of these brands.
GEC stands for general electric company and was founded in england. they set up factories in india during the colonial days and exported fans and motors to the far east. GEC became one of the leading fan manufacturers in the south east asian region. unfortunately, they were subsumed by marconi and no longer produce fans.
USHA is an indian company and is still doing well though their designs do not appeal to me as much as they did in the past.
Crompton Parkinson is another british motor company that produced generators and the like and were very successful in ceiling fans from the 1930s onwards. they are now known as crompton greaves. they still produce fans but not in the same style as the ones captured in the photos i submitted.

I once visited a website that claimed that Crompton Parkinson was still in business under that name and making fans in Italy. I cannot locate the address, but I did save the pictures of the fans, and they are in the Yahoo Group. Quiet unique fans. And the one you have a photo of looks to be far close to 1960 than 1930. Welcome to the group. Dan

yes its from the same webpage. there were actually a few different models available. there was an italian and english version of the same page i think.
strangely, ive not been able to find the link but i do remember how the fans look like.
dont u think one of the crompton parkinson fans strongly resembles the GEC 'armor' fans in my gallery?
regarding the 'ballshape' crompton parkinson fan in my album, where did you come across them? ive only seen them in singapore, hongkong and malayisa.

Yes, that's a similar design, and I *like* it. I like the pictures you've added recently. I've never seen fans quite like these before. Perhaps I should visit Singapore for a while

you would be better off making a trip to malaysia, especially the smaller towns like malacca which is renowned for curio shops. you will find an abundance of old ceiling fans there, same as any other small town in malayisa.
thailand has some nifty fans though.
not that many of these fans left in singapore due to rapid urban redevelopment.

I have a neighbor that travels to Malaysia for work with the University, I'll ask her to bring me back some fans.
