I was eating a dinner with the Emerson Northwind on low, but about 15 minutes ago, it came on high by itself. I pulled the chain down 2 times, and it still ran on high. I kept pulling it and try to turn it back on low, but I found out it now have high-high-high-off. I want to fix it so I can put it back on low. There is a wall switch for it, but that also controls the light so I can't install a control for it permanently. I'll install a 3 speed control until I can get it fixed, and only use the light when the wall control is on the high setting.

I've never heard about this happening. You have to actually change the fan speed yourself in order for the fan speed to change. It can't, and won't, change on its own.

I looked inside and the capacitor doesn't look good. I might have to wire the light kit so it will be independent from the switch. The fan DID change the speed on its own while the chain is still on the 3rd position.

I would need to see pics in order to exactly determine the problem

THIS IS THE EXACT SAME THING THAT HAPPENED TO OUR HAMPTON BAY TIFFANY CARDINAL IN OUR KITCHEN! It was running on low, and it changed to high speed by itself. It's definitely the capacitor; that's what's wrong with mine.

I'll have to have an electrician to modify the wire so the light kit will be independent from the switch so I can change the speed with the wall switch and have the light on.

When I was a little kid, my friend had this King of Fans AB hugger fan it was 52" with cane blades and a 4 tulip shade light kit from either JCPenny or BEST. They actually had 2, one in the living room and one in the master bedroom. His dad was an electrician and he always told us never to pull the chains on the one downstairs so he must have known something was wrong with it. One night, we slept in the living room and the fan was on high as I was falling asleep and randomly it began to spin down to a real slow speed, I was scared lol. Eventually, I passed out and when I woke up in the morning, the fan was back on high again. It never made sense to me until I learned about capacitors. The fan eventually stopped working altogether and the kid's dad replaced them both with these Hunter Amhersts. Just thought I'd back up the theory.

Since it's not a Casa or anything, you just need to head over to HD or Lowe's and pick up the right type of capacitor. Take your capacitor out and take it with you to make sure you buy the right kind. Just install it, and there you go. You could also buy a new 3-speed pull switch.

I have replaced it with Casablanca Zephyr, so I can take the capacitor to The Home Depot. Once I fix the Emerson, I'll keep the Emerson in the storage.

Can I see the pics of the Zephyr? You said you'd have a camera cable by this week.
