I just tell them it's a childhood thing. Most smart women like guys that have unique things about them. Plus when you're getting to know someone and need a conversation starter, "let me tell you the strangest thing about me" sometimes works!

I remember when I stopped making it a secret and started telling girls about it. They found it intriguing. HAHA. Well, things haven't worked like that for me. I think it's in the way you go about it. I might tell them "one of my hobbies is fixing up old ceiling fans and getting them back out into the community", and that as either part of volunteering at Habitat or fixing stuff in general (girls want a handyman, right? especially if they're looking to get married.) I WOULDN'T tell them that I know 50 obscure things about every make and model of fan known to man, that I can tell you a brand of ceiling fan just by looking at it, that I spend a lot of time on a ceiling fan website, etc. etc. etc. I also wouldn't let anything ceiling fan related be the first thing someone finds out about me. That's exactly what I said to one of my friends. I agree with Dan too.

Yes, but you're French, so everyone finds you obnoxious anyways.

Today, in my travels, I stopped at only one of two remaining Menards in WI that havent been updated and remodeled. This one had fans over the snack bar! They appear to be CECs but have friction drive canopies: I was really hoping to find one that had Bananafans over the snack bar. The Appleton one did when I was a child, so did some in the Twin Cities area. Havent seen one since. They also had Mosses, CEC spinners, Toastmasters . . . other people from the midwest can probably name some others. There is supposedly one other Menards that hasnt been remodeled in West Allis, WI. When I get a chance I will check it out.

They appear to be CECs but have friction drive canopies: I bet it's because they were friction drives at one point... note how the canopies and downrods are brown, but the fans are white/brass... Also note that the one closest to the camera has either had its brackets (blades too maybe?) replaced, or is a different fan altogether.

The brackets were replaced.
They were clearly originally some other fan . . . but I dont recall Menards ever selling Friction Drives. What other fans used that canopy?

Oh man, that's a blast from the past right there. I was never in our old Menards, but it has since been converted into a strip mall of sorts and still has those old rafters and everything much the same, just divided up. The new Menards did have a snack bar for some time, but never had fans that I remember. Wait, now that I think about it, a long time ago it may have had a couple fans, but they'd probably be like late 90's Hunters... It was on the ground floor, not in the rafters lol, and had its own little canopy constructed from logs, kind of a lodge theme.

Dan- There's an industrial fan in picture #13 or #14. It looks like it's priced at $34.98. Did you get a good look at that one?

Bryan, those pictures are from 2006. They still sell that industrial but it's now $50. And it's not very good.

The one in the pics is actually a Litex Utility, they sold them for a time, and now they have a different version, at least here they do. Blades and motor are different, still just as crappy though.

Pretty cool fans...I like the setting of those. I wish there were more Menards like this still around.

The brackets were replaced. They were clearly originally some other fan . . . but I dont recall Menards ever selling Friction Drives. What other fans used that canopy? Your Original knockoff. Who says those fans originally had to be Menards-sold fans? Other places don't necessarily use their own fans... at least one of my local Home Depots has some clearly non-Hampton Bay metal bladed industrials installed, as did the one where I used to live... also, I don't think ANY of the Super Walmarts around here use their own fans (albeit for good reason, of course).
