Our ceiling fan (modern style 3 speed, reversible) has a bad capacitor (black box with 3 wires, burned and smells bad). The black box has a small wiring diagram imprinted on it... a 1uF and a 2uF capacitor, each sharing one lead. Can I just use standard electrolytic capacitors for this repair, assuming I choose the correct capacitance and rating (350V) ? I understand that electrolytic capacitors are sensitive to polarity. Will this be a problem in this application, or will this type of capacitor work ok for this repair? Thanks in advance.

You can probably get away with electrolytics, but you've got to be sure they are rated 110v or over.. And also the bare wiring has got to be well secure... As far as wiring, I would have to wire as I'm disconnecting the old

FYI: Electrolytics will EXPLODE when connected to AC. There's a reason they are polarized. AC changes polarity 120 times a second...
