Hi I would like to put a variable speed control on my late 1970's/early 80's Miami Carey CF852 ceiling fan, in hopes of slowing the speed down. The directions say the new switch can only be used on a shaded pole or split capacitor motor only. Do you have any tips on how I can find out what fan motor I have?

Almost all ceiling fan motors are PSC, older ones (older Hunter Originals, antiques and such) are shaded pole. You're fine.

What is the difference between the stack type motor and PSC or Single Pole? Do variable speed switches work on a stack type motor just in case that is what my fan is? Thanks

Thanks Stack motors in ceiling fans are PSC. "Single pole" means absolutely nothing when it comes to motors. Again, almost all ceiling fan motors are PSC, they'll work fine with variable speed controls.

The new variable control switch instructions has warnings about burning up the fan and then maybe the house that I've been hesitant to install it, and your feedback is much appreciated as i now feel confident to proceed...
Thank you again

Nice fan. You can use the variable speed control on it, however if it causes the fan to be loud you will want to try another control.

You could try a different control, or you could go with a 3-speed or 5-speed wall control.

The variable speed control hums....any suggestions on another control? Thanks If you don't have the original 5-speed wall control for it just use it with a modern slide or rotative preset quiet 3-speed capacitive wall control they sell in most of home centers and lighting showroom. That should work just fine.
