I have a SMC KB 36 ceiling fan , and the pull chain is broken . I bought a single pole 3 pull - pull chain , and on the back of the pull it has L 1 2 3 . I hooked the wires up the same way , and now nothing works . I hear the motor humming , but if I pull the chain once , then nothing happens. The next three times , there is still no rotation. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Bob Either you misplaced a wire, the backs of the pull chain controls are different, or you have a bad capacitor (that little black box you referred to in another thread). SMC's are notorious for having crappy capacitors. Is the capacitor "swollen" any? If so, that's the first thing I'd change.

no the capacitor is not swollen the wires are connected the right way i did buy an extra pull chain switch maybe i got a bad one i will switch it out in the morning. See what happened is i installed light kits on these fans while stuffing the wires in the houseing the plastic tip that connects the switch to the body broke off the fan was working properly until that happened.
What purpose does the capacitor serve is it something that can be eliminatedor is that what regulates the Hi Med. Low? Also if i just put a single pull chain in it it will run on Hi only right and that will be to much this thing really spins

I think you got the wrong replacement pullchain. Order the correct one from someplace like www.ceilingfanparts.com. It's not the capacitor.

you are very right the switch is unlike most electric stores have seen the replacement i was buying is a single pole three throw pull chain so i took one of them apart and compared it with the original the hot wire comes in and onlly contacts one wire contact at a time on the original switch it can contact three, two, or just one.
