No.. that fan IS real, the blades are ALSO real. There is absolutely nothing fake about this fan whatsoever.

Lol, my ceiling fan has fake blades. They only assume the shape of a real blade, but they are fake.

are the fake blades pitched and dose it have fake chains[ this will probably be the stupidest question i will ask]but i am curios No there are no chains at all as a matter of fact. And yes, to answer your question, as well as Troy's, the blades are pitched, as if it were a real fan, however they do not spin, they are stationary. No.. that fan IS real, the blades are ALSO real. There is absolutely nothing fake about this fan whatsoever. I believe he is aware that is real. He was using that as an example to describe the "see-through" can blades I described on the FAKE fan earlier in the thread. I still do not have pictures.

What I meant by "FAKE" is numerous people in the past have considered the see-through cane blades to be fake, when in fact they aren't. This blatant stupidity pisses me off.

Well I see that you are frustrated. I just wanted to take the time to let you know that at no time were my posts intended to upset anybody. I apologize for the "blatant stupidity" however these terms were used to more accurately describe this fan, of which, is fake. Being that the fan is "fake", without the intention of functioning like a normal fan, that would also mean that the concept of blades is fake. I apologize for the confusion. The word "FAKE" this is/has been used in this thread is vague in the sense that the concept of the said fan is FAKE.

May I ask somebody if "see-through" cane blades used on REAL fans (REAL used in this sense meaning that it is a ceiling fan functioning in the intended purpose of a conventional ceiling fan) operate properly?
The reason why I ask is because I would think that the holes in the cane would allow air to pass through it, instead of over it.

What I meant by "FAKE" is numerous people in the past have considered the see-through cane blades to be fake, when in fact they aren't. This blatant stupidity pisses me off. No need to get so heated. I dont know about fake, but blades with open cane are clearly designed to be more aesthetic than effective. This is just like gear driven ceiling fans and many other developments of the 1970s. Would you call a gear driven Casablanca fake? Well, maybe, since it doesnt actually move air.

thats what i would think, it might move some air but not as much as a traditional blade

But why exactly about the see through cane? Is it because the air can goes through the blade so it makes the fan less effective?

What is your question exactly?

I have seen non-gear-driven early Casablanca Victorians with open cane - the bar in Louie's Cuisine of China in Ballard (Seattle) WA has four, and Bautista's Hole In The Wall Italian restaurant in Las Vegas (one block behind Bill's Gamblin' Hall, the ex-Barbary Coast, beside a casino/convenience/liquor store) is full of them. I haven't seen the fans at Bautista's in operation, but the ones at Louie's, on what I would call low (but not "aesthetic low") speed, do move a nice gentle breeze.
What Joel is describing, for all those arguing/debating, seems to be a decorative swag lamp with a metal disk and attached blades to give the appearance of being a ceiling fan - in the late 70s, ceiling fans returning to vogue, I'm sure this was seen as a sales (and decor) boost to a simple light fixture. While the chain-hung, gear-driven fan pictured on the first page is a rotating but non-fuctional (as far as airflow goes) fan, and the spinner with open cane is an (arguably) useful fan, Joel's fan-in-question is nothing more than a lamp in disguise. The blades do not, and cannot, rotate. It sounds as though the standard globe-holder (like one normally sees on a fan) is probably bolted to a flat metal disk to which the blade holders are attached.
I have seen a few decoration-only "fans" that were NOT lights, made entirely of woven rattan. These are usually painted white and have latticework blades with many loops and scrolls and a basket-shaped "motor housing", and are simply for atmosphere. I think they're cool, and would love to find one for sale. I have seen them on eBay years ago, and a local thrift store had one on display for many years, that was NOT for sale - I asked many times (and wouldn't you know, one day it was gone - yes, they sold it)
Joel, I, too, eagerly await photos of this. Do you know any history on where it was purchased?

Thanks jonasclark, you are right on!
Well, no photos as of yet, I believe I'll be visiting my grandparents on Saturday, so hopefully I can grab a few pictures.
No history on it at all, as it was there when they bought the house. It is a duplex.. A few interesting fans, actually, I'll have to snap some pictures.
When I first went to help them move in years ago, I noticed it was fake immediately, and they didn't even realize, not giving it much thought.

Jonas's response is exactly in line with my thinking.
