Why are blender fans called blender fans? And what was Emerson's real name for that series?

You know, I was just going to write a message about that, since you brought up the topic of fan terminology with your "vents" post.
Let me start by saying, I have no idea what Emerson called them . . . if anything. They appear to be older versions of their current "Heat Fan".
Anyhow, let me tell you a story. When I was about in 6th grade, I had a friend here in town who was quite a character. We called him OOOGA because he played the trumpet, if that paints a picture. Anyhow, he was weird enough that I thought he would take to ceiling fan collecting, so I attempted to introduce him to it. I pointed out various fans and what they were called, who made them, etc. We took lots of pictures. At the time I did not know that these particular fans were made by Emerson . . . and when I pointed them out to OOOGA he said "the motor looks kind of like a blender" and I started calling them "blenderfans" because I didnt know what else to call them. When we finally scanned all the photos we took, I called the picture of that fan "blenderfan.jpg" and I posted all these pictures on an FTP site on the internet (this was in the days before free websites, so FTP was all we had). A lot of people started downloading the pictures, and the name got circulated and pretty soon everyone was calling them "blenderfans". My own little weird legend.
BTW the original blender fan picture was of a white 52" four blade one, switch housing, hanging way up high in a pottery in New York. I still have the photo . . . it's got one of those big metal lamps hanging next to it, I like those lamps too.

I'm going to upload as soon as I can figure out how to upload more than one picture at once. I have close to a thousand pictures (it was way more than that but I went through and picked the best ones, took forever) and it would take decades to upload them one at the time. The pottery pic is among them. My friend is/was very weird but very cool . . . I think we're all weird, to collect fans I told AP to get his ass on here and explain his theory, he will

well, since you put it that way --here is my theory ! pierce, that fan is BEAUTIFUL! I wish you could have taken it down -for yourself. At first glance it looks like an antique diehl or peerless fan that has been completely restored and brass plated --very much like one! It also resembles a very high-end Panasonic model i once saw ,it had the same unique blade brackett. do you have any close ups of the fan? that would really help. Later, adrian

montgomery wards sold the emerson fans in their 70's catalogs, they are called the "casablanca"series by emerson.......no connection to casablanca fan company.....they refered to the movie Casablanca, and the boxes read: remember casablanca? and had a pic of humphrey bogart in most of their ads. i have a 70's catalog with the very fan in it. hope this answers your blender fan questions. bye, adrian

Ahhh...as I said, I'm down in south Florida with my camera and some professional black/white film, taking fan pics. Ran into some NICE blender fans today. Relpaced 9 fans at a friends house with Hampton Bays. Adrian...you are right. Those fans were made by Panasonic. If you look at my post in Buy/Sell/Trade about my Panasonic fan...the WEIRD cloth pull chain and the VERY unique connector are the same on my selling Panasonic and the old ones you saw pics of. And since you confirmed with the blade bracket thing, I am POSITIVE that my old fans were made by Panasonic. Thanks BTW, I'm still trying to contact the new owners of the house and get the fans.

The "blenderfans" are the ones with no motor housings and, often, no switch housing. Those were called Casablanca too? I have (had?) an old box to one of the Emerson Casablancas. It was one of those crappy ones with the friction drive. Did that line come first, or . . . how did the friction drive crap ones fit in with the really good quality K55 & K63 ones?

the friction drive were sorta between models--they tried to fit in with the stylish fans, now the friction drives fit well in a dumpster--they were crap -noisey and vibrated.--and all plastic--eeeuuukk ! after their friction motor trauma, they put the k55's in the large plastic housing....still a plastic fan,but at least witha decent motor.

I used to have one of those fans installed on my porch. tThat fan wobbled like hell and the flywheel wore out, in other words, I chucked it ;D. BTW, I have the original manual and the blades incase anyone's interested.

Evergo (Under Toastmaster name) had a version of them. I've had three brown ones, and a white one. They were plentiful at the Reuse Center, Till they all got chucked in the free pile because they were CRAP!

pierce, it was a big mistake emerson & nutone did for avery short while. a big plastic housing (in nutones case , a very nice looking fan) but emerson was really cheap looking . inside the large housing was this tiny motor with a rubber wheel , it was spring-loaded against a large spinner (flywheel) to make the fan turn. these fans were soooooo noisey ! vibrated ,etc. i remember the one in my aunts home-she hated it soooo much. it was in the upstairs bedroom and you could hear it grinding upstairs. she finally came to her senses and let me take it down & replace it with a casablanca fan. we then opened the upstairs window, and i let her do the honors of tossing out the window in one piece --can you guess how many that p.o.s. fan ended up in??? hope this answers you question. bye, adrian
