the Publix in West Palm off Southern Blvd use to have a Buy Rite next to it, which later became a Eckerd drugstore when Buy Rite left Florida.. The Publix looked like this one minus the inside coming all the way up pass the shopping center walkway.. It was modernized in 1997... We use to shop there once a week, and I remember the remodeling process...

Was that the one we got the two fixtures from that you're talkin about? I remember a lonnnggg time ago there was another retro style publix like the one still open in south beach here in boca off Camino Real, they built a newer bigger one in the late 90s down the street and the old one became a seafood market, and the exterior and interior was rennovated, the old Eckerd (now CVS of course) is still open next to it.

no this one didn't look like the one we good the fixtures out of... I've never seen those Southern Lighting light fixtures before, unless they look exactly the same as the U.S. Fluorescent ones... Judging by these they don't, but i can't really tell on these pictures, i notice they do mount to ceiling instead of within.. fanman may know if you don't

The Southern Lighting fixtures were attached to the ceiling best I remember, and had a "V" in the middle covering the wiring and the tubes on the sides.
Our Publix had an Eckerd drugstore next door and it moved to a new building in front and the Publix took over the old Eckerd and made it the bakery, deli, and produce departments. Now the Eckerd is a CVS like the others.
The Publix in the next town opened about 20 years ago and it is about to close because they made the Albertson's that was built into the late 90s into a Publix and they don't have enough business for two there. It's got terrazo floors but I don't remember much else about it.

So the Southern Lighting fixtures has the "V" shape in the middle like the U.S. Fluorescent fixtures I rescued? Did the Southern Fixtures look much different than the U.S. Fluorescent I rescued? if so do you remember any detail? I've never been to a Publix with that old style drop ceiling and those Fixtures.... And there is probably no longer any around, so i will never get a chance to ever see them.. The oldest Publix in West Palm Beach must have been built in the early 1970s
I did a research the right way this time from that sunbiz site and i came up with both companies.. Southern Lighting was around from 1962 to the late 60s.. and U.S Fluorescent is from 1975-1980.. So the Southern Lighting fixtures are much older by 10 years and up

I don't think the Southern lighting fixtures were much different. They had the V in the middle and the tubes were on the sides. That Publix opened in 1962 where those were. I later saw a fixture like them discarded at the recycling center.
I went to the 1980s Publix that was about to close to get a sandwich for lunch and it had the square white vents and the rectangular lay in fixtures. Not egg crate style. That Publix closed like two days on a Saturday evening after I went there. About a week ago.

I went to two 1980s Publix near my area in Boynton beach area this last Saturday. The ceiling goes higher in the middle of the stores and the lighting is round spot lights installed in the drop ceiling, they sorta look like gym lights.. And the other fixtures are the most common fixtures (Troffer Lights).. The Publix stores are small and one has the green terrazzo flooring

Hey adam we should have gone into that publix here in boca i showed you that one time, it used to have the long strip lights with the V in the middle as well. that one has been modernized, but you can see the old terrazzo flooring outlines comming through the newer flooring tiles, and the drop ceiling is all the same height throughout the whole store, the front of the store still has the old lights like this

Im thinking we should wear some breathing protection if we ever do get in there because of all the mold and asbestos in there

you're right, maybe one of those type of masks doctors use for surgery... Yup the top part of this picture where the ceiling is lower is now collapsed on the floor as we saw today.. Looks to be drywall ceiling
