I noticed in the thread about throwing things at fans (sorry, I forget the username - I'm new on here!) that Woolworths only survives in Australia. Happy news for ya, it's still alive and kicking well in the UK... Woolworths Local in smaller towns: A bigger store, this one in the suburb of Allerton, Liverpool, Merseyside: Large branch in Walsall, West Midlands and also South Africa, especially around Johannesburg where my dad lives.. The UK Woolworths concentrates on Music, DVD, Homewares, basic DIY, Toys, Stationary, Sweets and childrens Clothing. The South African 'Woolworths' is actually what we know in the UK as Marks & Spencers. There are the Woolworths Food stores (M&S Simply Food in the UK). The decor and ranges of goods sold (even down to the packaging and labels) are identical. There are also Woolworths in shopping malls in SA which sell clothing, home lighting and furniture, just as the Marks & Spencers stores do in the UK. For the fans of Woolies amongst you, I hope this is happy news

F.W. Woolworths was the original store, based in the USA. They went out of business in 1997. There was a point where they were doing so well that they expanded internationally; to Germany, Austria, England, and Cyprus. All four of those chains split off and became their own companies, and diverged (the UK one split in 1982).
There are also chains called Woolworth's in South Africa, Australia, and New Zealeand; however, those are not (and never have been) related other than by name.
Woolworth's was a five-and-ten store (a/k/a drugstore) here in the USA...not a supermarket. It was essentially the same as what Eckerd, Rite Aid, CVS, Genovese, etc., are.
The Woolworths in the town where I grew up in New Jersey had cool fans -- brown 4-blade 52"ers; Emersons, if I remember correctly (1895 Series? TOCs? Something else? I don't remember which model).

Come to think of it, a lot of small stores (i.e. hardware stores, drugstores, etc.) here on the east coast have (or used to have) cool 70s and 80s fans in them. I've seen so many True Value stores with Emersons (typically brown) it's not even funny.

That's because True Value sold Emersons, and they took them off the shelves.
