Anyone notice the popularity of 5 blade pedestal fans rising? Holmes was one of the few I remember, but Lasko's picking up on it too. I recently got back from my brother's apartment in Springfield which, as he told me 5 minutes before opening the door, had no AC. Instead was a constantly running 18" lasko pedestal. Ordinarily I'd completely tear it apart with criticism, but I must say, it was very nice. You receive more air, but no roar, which box fan's are notorious for. Odd, because it's obviously just a box fan blade (wide hub and everything) on an oscillating fan motor. The fan has a very distinct blade noise which is altogether comforting in the night, and low speed is BARELY audible. Might just invest into one sometime soon. ALSO! Check out the nice replacement that lakewood's come out with for the 9" HV. The Kool Operator Jr is undoubtedly the best 8" fan of the small desk fan caliber. It doesn't quite match its all metal HV brother or is it as quiet, but the motor quality is very good, as is the steep blade pitch. Puts out massive air for its size, and only 13 bucks at your local Walmart. Very well worth the money and was a lifesaver in that scorcher of an apartment!

Yes I have noticed that, Holmes was one of the first around 1999-2000 with a 16'' stand fan with 5 green plastic blades and a white body, very quiet running. Another one 20'' with four speed and very powerful and 5 blue plactic blades. The Lasko 18'' stand fan that you are talking about is this this one? www.laskoproducts.com/fans/model_1820.html

Thats the one! They also have a remote control model if you're not too fond of adjusting the speeds in the middle of the night. Great fan I'll say.

My uncle has one of those laskos. I haven't seen it running yet though. My aunt had one of those Holmes 20" with the 5 skinny blades, but she returned it. My uncle gave me a 4 blade version though. I have a pic somewhere of it. My other uncle picked up a 16" remote controlled one. I was fond of this one when I was a kid. This fan is AWESOME! My 4 blade version: I found this on the side of the road, the blade cap/holder unscrewed itself and the blades fell off the shaft. The owner apparently assumed it was broken and threw it out. I fixed it easily.

The 5 blade Lasko is a good fan, but I was a little leary of the fans having plastic guards, but they are actually pretty sturdy.
I bought a 12" Duracraft recently. It is all plastic, but I am impressed. It is easy to assemble and moves a lot of air! It is rather noisy though.
The Kool Operator Jr, is also a good fan. I belive it has been around since the late 90s though.

The lakewood you have pictured is the same one that sits near my bedside...I switch it out with the homestar every now and then to sleep to and is never turned above low at night. Never needed! I love that little feller, as its not too heavy but very sturdy.
Surprisingly, the 5 blade 18" lasko's guard is fairly strong, but its in tension. When separated in half, it feels very flimsy and weak, but when assembled is much more sturdy. Seems the plastic they used is flexible, but not easily broken. (Correct me if I'm wrong) The Kool Operator Jr. seems to be made very similar to the vornado, with a semi-flexible, but VERY durable plastic.
I like your 4 blade pedestal Holmes as well! Wish I nabbed one years ago, but alas, money was little and so was I. "You have enough fans for now" was the popular answer from my parents.

"You have enough fans for now" was the popular answer from my parents. That's what my parents said too. When I had 20, 30, 40, and 50 fans... ;D

Ok, I went scavenging through my collection of fan clippings and found a couple: This was the Lasko model before the 5 blade conversion. In 16" and 18": Does this one count? Technically it has 8 blades: Black & Decker: This was the fan I was talking about: The fan I have is in the middle, I also have the Wind Tunnel Remote, and my aunt used to have the fan on the right.
