I think Dan is the only other guy here who plays organ, and I think he only plays Hammond electric jazz/gospel organs (I may be wrong), but some of you may find this interesting. I think everyone knows that I'm an organist/choir director by trade. And I just recently found a picture of the organ that I used to play every Sunday when I lived in Massachusetts: Kind of scary looking, ain't it? (1:13:19 AM) xxPipexxOrganxx: you know how (1:13:24 AM) xxPipexxOrganxx: if you get into a really cheap car (1:13:30 AM) xxPipexxOrganxx: and crank the stereo up real loud (1:13:48 AM) l3ath3rskill3t86: and it distorts and mess, right? (1:13:59 AM) xxPipexxOrganxx: how the tinny little cheap speakers like get that effect where they stop outputting useful sound and the cones just sort of rattle? (1:14:07 AM) l3ath3rskill3t86: yes (1:14:08 AM) xxPipexxOrganxx: yeah, it's that distored thing (1:14:20 AM) xxPipexxOrganxx: my eardrums did that when i played that organ full-blast (1:14:26 AM) l3ath3rskill3t86: haha (1:14:37 AM) xxPipexxOrganxx: louder than the one at the mormon tabernacle out in salt lake city (1:14:39 AM) xxPipexxOrganxx: by FAR (and yes, i played that one too) (1:14:46 AM) xxPipexxOrganxx: seriously, it made my eardrums do that (1:14:49 AM) xxPipexxOrganxx: it was painful (1:14:52 AM) xxPipexxOrganxx: but SO worth it (1:14:58 AM) xxPipexxOrganxx: that's why i have such bad hearing (1:15:03 AM) xxPipexxOrganxx: that organ is the one and only reason

BTW, for anyone who's interested about the world's largest organ, it is the Boardwalk Hall Auditorium organ in Atlantic City, NJ. 33,114 pipes. This is what the console looks like -- SEVEN keyboards (yes, they had to go vertical): Here it is again, closer up: Here is a shot from some of the bass pipes (note the man on the scaffolding, and note how small he is in relation to the pipe): The blowers are so powerful on this thing that the folks have to call the Atlantic City power company to warn them before they can turn it on--otherwise, they'll short out part of the city's power grid and some of the casinos will go down. Seeing those organs makes me think of the tune "The Happy Organ" by Dave 'Baby' Cortez...produced in 1963, I think.
I always wondered what kind of organ that tune was played on.

BTW, there was a Mister Rogers episode when Fred met with an organist at a church and he then demonstrated how he played an enormous organ. As I recall, the organist had to wear some special footwear when playing the organ.

As I recall, the organist had to wear some special footwear when playing the organ. Organists wear organ shoes, which are nothing more than tap-dancing shoes with the taps removed--in other words, slim shoes with leather soles. They look like the picture here: www.organmastershoes.com/Why do organists wear organ shoes? If you hit a pedal too hard (like if you're playing something fast and furious like a lot of Bach's stuff), it's really easy to get a marching fracture or a corkscrew fracture right up your leg. Those take over a year to heal, and are insanely painful. Personally, I hate wearing them cuz they're mad uncomfortable. If you look at how I play in my YouTube videos ( www.youtube.com/piercetheorganist), you'll see that I just play in my socks. However, I'm getting an organ for my home, which means I'll be playing daily again (good for my spirit, bad for my knees), so I'll probably have to start wearing my shoes again. A lot of organists end up needing (a) hearing aids, and (b) knee replacements. It's kind of the occupational hazard.

They look like the picture here: I've been trying to find some special organ shoes, since I cant play well in regular shoes. I play barefoot, but my feet hurt after a lot of fast walking basslines. I know organists that play in tennis shoes, tims, my Godmother plays in 6" high heels.

Eh, Organmaster Shoes is the way to go. That's the link above. They're what I have. There aren't too many organ shoe companies out there. I know organists that play in tennis shoes, tims, my Godmother plays in 6" high heels. You can play the organ in whatever shoes you want--the idea is to put a cushion between the wooden pedals and the bones in your feet. Heels? That's impressive. You can use whatever you want--but if it's too wide, you'll hit a lot of accidental double notes.

Gorgeous church. Any fans up there? Some brown/brass Taras or some 3 blade blenderfans would look perfect. No, no fans in there. And yeah, that church is insanely pretty. The stained glass is breathtaking, and the pews are this beautiful dark hardwood color which goes well with both the floor and the organ. That organ case is solid Honduran mahogany. That church would look best with bright brass fans--FASCOs, maybe Emersons, maybe Casablancas, maybe even Originals...but def. not blenders, and def. not anything brown/brass. Anything like that would look just... cheap compared to everything else in that room. It happens to be an Episcopal church, so they do everything in grand style. They'd want fans to match the Communion wine chalice.

if it's too wide, you'll hit a lot of accidental double notes. I dont understand-- I cant play in my normal shoes, can barely play in dress shoes, yet I have friends that can play in these HUGE boots that are about as wide as three pedals, and not hit ANY accidentals.

I've seen hundreds of churches like that. 80% of them had brown blenderfans up there, blending in to the ceiling. 5% had brown Crompton Greaves, 5% had brown Envirofans. The remaining 10%, I remember one EXTREMELY fancy church with 5 ornate Nutone Verandahs, one with some ornate antique brass Victorian copies, one with Nutone industrials . . . all dark colored fans. Even the fanciest churches, the fans blend in. My grandmothers church had an organ FAR more impressive than that, stained glass everywhere, everything done to look like a palace . . . and four brown 3 bladed blenderfans. Gorgeous church.

Then you must be hitting the pedals with the bottom of your shoe. Proper pedaling is *always* done by hitting the pedal with the side of your shoe (think soccer). 30 to 45 degree angle, you'll be all set.

Bright brass against all that dark wood? No, the fans wouldnt stand out. I think you missed the entire point . The prevailing theory in the Episcopal church is that the only thing in the room which should stand out is the altar, the cross, and anything else which gives glory to God (i.e. the communion box, the organ, candle-holders, etc.).

Right, so the fans would blend in to the brown on the ceiling. I.e, brown industrials.
Although I personally think fans can give glory to God.
Elsewhere on these forums I've posted a picture of my church. Since then we've gotten an organ (3 Leslies) and upgraded the PA system. The ceiling fans are still the same. I'd love to put PH Charlestons or similar in their place.
