President Theodore Roosevelt on immigration - 1907:
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
That's how America was founded--by people who came here to seek a better life and to contribute. They showed up, worked hard, were honest and decent, and were proud to be Americans.
Do any of you know how the Macy's Day Parade started?
"In the 1920s many of Macy's department store employees were second-generation immigrants. Proud of their new American heritage, they wanted to celebrate the American holiday of Thanksgiving with the type of festival their parents had loved in Europe."
Thanks to Wikipedia for that one.
I'm sick of people saying "haha, up yours gringo, I'm going to come across that border if I want to", and then showing up and NOT assimilating.
Assimilation is blending in.
Infiltration is setting up your own system within an already-established system. Of course, the medical term for that is "cancer".
If people, from Mexico or elsewhere, want to immigrate here legally and contribute to the already-established communities and economy, then that's totally cool. That's how this country was founded.
But what's NOT cool is all the illegal aliens that show up and set up their own society within ours. I'm sick of businesses that have signs saying "hablamos espanol" out front. I'm sick of special grocery stores, special sections in Wal-Mart, special parts of town, etc. etc. etc. for illegals. It's so arrogant to show up and say "We're going to speak OUR language, and we want it to be the co-official language of YOUR country. We're going to have our own churches, our own stores, and our own little society."
Damn it, either be an American in America, or be a Mexican in Mexico. You can't have it both ways. I wouldn't move to France and demand that everyone speak to me in English, and that they change their official language, and that they grant me legal status even though I broke the law and came in illegally. It's like going into someone else's house and bossing them around. It's arrogant and disrespectful.
If a Mexican shows up, works hard, flies our flag, gives back to the communities that support him, speaks our language, abides by our laws and customs, helps our little old ladies cross the street, etc., then he's welcome here. But the current arrogant stance of "try and keep me out, I'll come here if I want, and I don't care what it does to your jobs or your lives" deserves quick and severe punishment.
"Pay your takes--11 million illegal immigrants are depending on you!"
Mexican takeover? Over my dead body. I'll go down shooting.
