Kmart is gone.. well it will be. As in March 2005 Kmart locations will become Sears. Sears Roebuck & Co. made the announcement today. Check your local news, MSNBC or CNN for more info.
Kmart was a big part of Americana. When i was a child, this store was my favorite place to go on Saturdays., As an adult i still loved it, Kmart is and will always be my favorite.
This was the last nameplate K Holdings had., first Kresgy, a Kmart sister store that close in 1982, then Builders Square in 1995 and now Kmart.
Big K will be missed.

Sad, I used to love the KMarts and their ads when I was a child. Best place to see vintage SMCs and Evergos as well as some cool spinners. Builders Square also had some unusual lines of fans.
Glad so see Sears is doing strong enough to buy them, I always thought ever since they gave up their catalog department they were declining, and it would be a shame to see them fizzle out, they also had very cool fans in the 70s & 80s, and have good quality hand tools.

In the mid '80s they had one of the best fan departments i've seen in a department store. Back in the days, they use to compete with Home Depot and Lowes which also had a very small selection.
Between 1989 and 1996 Sears had a very impressive fan department selling unique Kenmores, Madison Avenues, exclusive Litex, Alohas and Hunters. The Kenmore name was replace by Designer's Choice in 1994.

Yes they did. I'm going to miss Kmart just as much as Woolworth. Kmart was the biggest chain before Walmart came along....

I *loved* all the Emersons and Laskos Sears sold in the 80s. Around here, the fan display at the store was pretty small, but the catalog had a HUGE selection and I always cut out the pictures.
Once, when I was pretty young, my parents and I visited a KMart different that the one we usually went to. This one was a bit less kept up, and had a lot of old stock. In the ceiling fan department there were a number of spinners I'd never seen before, huge motors, capacitors on top. I dont recall them specifically enough to know who made them. The fans hung for display were the standard models of the time.

Just recently, I've been spending a lot of time at a local K-Mart. The cool thing is that there is hardly anyone there whenever I go there. I always check their fan section, and they have some Hunters (Wyndham series), which are on clearance. Most of their fans are Heritage or SMC (not the vintage kind). I miss the earlier days when I used to see all those so-called spinners such as the Carroways, SMC's, Georgians, etc. Aside from the fans, I like the bargains I get there--mainly on clothes. However, that K-Mart has 4 white 42" Hunter Originals in their Snack Bar or whatever. That was one of my fav stores as a child.

True. That's how I found an early 80s SMC (bell canopy) Emperor, back in the 90s. KMart was notorious for misplaced old stock that would turn up, at least around here.

From what I hear Kmart is buying Sears for $11 Billion. This was a big surprise to me, all of the Kmarts around here closed in 2002. Its nice to hear they are doing better. I was really disappointed when Builders Square (HQ) closed in the '90s, the store I always went to had a huge ceiling fan department with a larger variety than Home Depot.

I hope to find some of their old spinner fans and what not.

Well this may mean that Sears will start carrying fans again.

Well this may mean that Sears will start carrying fans again. I highly doubt it.
