I have 2 Hunter ceiling fans from about 1981. I want to know more about them, how to clean and oil them to reuse in a new house. One is bright brass, and one is painted brown, both original finishes. They are 4 blade. Also, can I buy new blades, and do I have to worry about the balance if I do? As you can tell, I don't know ANYTHING about the fans but what I have told you. Thank you.

No is the model of them "Original". That is the expensive model Hunter made and I believe the only model that requires oiling.

First of all: To both of you, please post with your real name, or sign up for the boards. Pretty soon Adam is going to make it you in order to post you HAVE to sign up, if this keeps happening.
On to the question:
1. Cleaning them is easy. Use a soft cloth (or paper towls) and a light cleaner. I often use WD40 as a cleaner because it leaves a protective coat of oil. Anything not too strong should work, and do not use too much. I've seen people use Windex, Simple Green, regular soap and water, etc. It's better to use oil-based cleaners, especially on the blades, so if you dont want to try WD40 I would recommend Murphy's Oil Soap. But chances are you dont need more than a light dusting unless the fans have seen some heavy dirt.
2. Oiling them assuming their the cast iron Hunters designed to be oiled (called the "Original") there is a small hole on the top of the housing in which to place the oil. There is special "Hunter Fan Oil" sold, but any 10-20wt non-detergent motor oil will work. Do not use WD40 or 3-in-1.
3. Why do you need new blades?

First of all, I TRIED to sign up, and thought I did, but when it came time to POST it didn't give me the options I needed...so TAKE a DEEP BREATH and help out a newbie! Or don't give GUEST as an option!
Now, as to the question, yes, they are the kind that need oil, I know that for sure. I am glad for the help, and esp, the suggestion of what kind of oil to use! So, thanks for the info, and I will try to do what I need to in order to use these wonderful old Hunters! And, I need new blades because I want a different look in one room, and one blade got broken in transit.
PS I tried again to post with the name I signed up with, and it won't let me...says another member has it, which I suppose is me...what am I supposed to do? Help out a novice, OK?

Sorry, didnt mean to be so harsh . . . that was mainly directed at "Fans" who has been told several times not to post with such a generic name. As for the blades, make sure you get a matched/balanced set for each fan, and you should be ok. I'm interested in the old Hunter blades if you're not looking to keep them. As for the sign in trouble, I will look into it when I return later, but that's more than likely a question for Adam. It sounds as though you signed up, and then tried to sign up again, rather than sign in? Try this: at the top of your screen you should see something that says: "Welcome Guest. Please Login or Register." It is clear you have already registered, so hit Login, or follow this link ada19851985.proboards25.com/index.cgi?action=loginFrom there you enter your username and password, and it should work. Lastly, you're welcome to post as a guest. However giving a very generic sounding name makes it hard to distinguish who is posting what. If everyone posted as "John" we would be in trouble. This is why people who post as ridiculous things like "Fans" get on my nerves. I assumed, wrongfully perhaps, that "bah" was not part of a name.

I did the same thing when I first signed up...btw Adam or Dan, you can delete member kgray82. Thanks Dan is right about the WD40, it's great...it even removes the gooey film tape and labels leave.
