So I picked up this 48" Emerson at the thrift store tonight (it's REALLY cool and unique; see my post in Gallery Updates). When I got it, it was covered in layers of RANCID tobacco tar. I took the motor apart and washed the plastic parts in the sink with dish soap, and it worked great. However, the blades are a slightly more difficult task. I tried Orange Clean - very little luck (even let it soak in for 10 minutes or so.) Simple Green at full strength worked pretty well, but it still left some and I don't want to ruin the blades by using it. Any suggestions, especially from those who have been cleaning up fans for a while?

On any metal parts that I run into I use windex, but I usually end up leaving the blades alone, take my Hunter Summer Breeze* for example. VERY YELLOW BLADES. Damn smokers. Does any one think wood polisher may work on the blades? MODIFY:*by the Summer Breeze I mean the 52" one that has been in my group for some time now, not the 42" one that was just added. Check out the massive photo update including a brown Original and an odd Japanese spinner, similar to the one Dan found in GA.

I'm very careful with blades, you dont want to let any water-based liquid soak in.
9/10 cases I use WD40 which both cleans and polishes. It's very good for both wood and metal.
In more sticky situations, I use Murphy's Oil Soap. It's oil-based so it's less likely to harm wood. When that isnt strong enough I use 409, however I am careful not to let it soak and to dry the the blades ASAP and then apply WD40.
I've tried a few other things, but these options usually work.

an odd Japanese spinner, similar to the one Dan found in GA. I found a Japanese Lasko and two KDKs. The Lasko has a stationary housing and capacitor-on-top (lower canopy). The KDKs have a very streamlined housing, the top piece rotates with the blades and *IS* the capacitor cover. Which is yours?

There is a pic of it uploaded to my group, and as soon as I get my email working again, would be more than happy to send pics via email. *MODIFY:Also I may add, that the spinner I found has a ceramic mounting plate. By mounting plate I mean the part that the blades mount onto.

Linking to pictures in Yahoo Groups is always a bad idea. For one, the extremely long links often get cut off (and are annoying. Second, Yahoo changes the location of the pictures often so the links become outdated very quickly. Lastly, the link wont work at all unless you are a member of the group in question and signed in. You cant assume that everyone viewing is a member of your group. I'm not.

The brackets are quite similar to the odd remote controlled SMC in the Yahoo galleries. Judging from the shape of the blades and top of the motor, I'd say it's a Lasko. Definitely not a KDK because the blades would mount underneath the top piece and not on top of it.

I recall seeing a spinner or a picture of a spinner with those brackets but I cant quite bring it to mind at the moment. Definitely not a KDK from what you say

I didnt catch this before. DEFINITELY a Lasko. Ok, thanks. That was my first thought but I figured that it just might be something else. You never really know when it comes to fans I guess. Of course I am the idiot who thought the Classic Fan was a 36" Hunter until I got home.
