Ok,
I just bought a light kit to go into a Spartan Ceiling Fan of whose age, I'm unsure of. It looks only several years old at the most. The fan only worked on 1 speed and I've never tried to change it since I bought the house a couple of years ago (house age is 20 years)
I took off the little plate switch plate and lost track of what wires went to where. Here's a breakdown of the wires.
Coming out of fan motor itself.
1 - Black 1- Blue 1 - White
Coming out of pull-chain switch (Not sure how many speeds assuming a standard hi-med-lo-off)
1 - Black 1- Red 1 - Blue
Variable Resistor or Dimmer Switch
1 - White 1 - Black
The black wire was hooked to the black wire of the fan switch (if memory serves correctly) and the white was loose and capped with a wire cap.
The new light kit has
1 - white 1 - black
I did a few variations and got the light to come on with the Fan running on high, but you hit the fan switch and it would cut off was well as the light. I'd have to click it it 3 more times to turn it back on to its one setting. I tried one variation and the dimmer switch would dim the lights, but the switch would only work the high speed of the fan.
I'm at a loss, if someone could help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

What model fan is it? It sounds to me like the "dimmer" is actually a variable speed switch.

For starters, your fan is not a three speed fan and the pullchain is not a hi-medium-low pullchain. The "dimmer switch" is used to adjust the speed of the motor.
I am presuming the light kit has it's own pullchain, therefore the end result, when we get this all straightened out, will be
1. Fan pullchain: fan on/off
2. "dimmer switch": fan speed control
3. Light pullchain: light on/off.
We can arrange it different, but that is standard.

Here is the way it is wired:
1. The black from the "motor" attaches to the black from the pullchain AND the black from the light.
2. The blue from the motor attaches to the blue from the pullchain and the black from the dimmer box.
3. The white from the "motor" attaches to the white from the light
4. The red from the pullchain attaches to the white from the dimmer box.
Your fan should work.

One final note: the pullchain is a two position pullchain. Think of your fan as a two speed fan. The first speed is high and the second speed is low, but you have the ability to adjust the low speed with the "dimmer switch". So if the "dimmer" is set to it's highest setting, the fan will only operate on high on both positions.
