If you have Dairy Queens in your area (the original ones, anyway, with the trademark buildings), you probably know they're a gold mine for vintage fans (especially in Texas.) The ones near where I'm originally from have the small 3 blade Evergo's. I've also seen them with Blenderfans (Elm Mott), NuTones (Ft. Worth), Panasonics (Temple - but the fans are adios), SMC's (Plano), ornate Crompton Greaves Encons (Hewitt) and 36" originals (Waco, but the fans are now gone). Also, the unusual spinners which I posted about in the Identify section are from Hubbard, TX near Corsicana.
The strange thing is, on I-45 from Dallas halfway to Houston, all the Dairy Queens have taken the blades off their fans. I first noticed this 3 or 4 years ago coming through Centerville (halfway between Dallas and Houston), and now that I'm in the Metroplex, I've seen that all of them between Corsicana and Dallas itself have been de-bladed. The "victims" I've seen personally were 4-blade flush mounts (Hampton Bay Chathams?) and some older fans in Ennis with footprint vents. The only reason the fans still exist is because the lights are the only light source for the dining room LOL.

Yes the ones in Rocky Mount North Carolina had these odd fans that I could never identify before. Well since then the fans have been removed, one of the Dairy Queens gone and the other remodeled. After joining the fan community I learned that these fans were called the "Plastic" Emerson. They were 36" and white in finish, the plastic had not even yellowed. The Subway next to them (this was in a plaza) had some blender fans in it. 36" three blades, but they also moved but to a location further down the plaza and The UPS Store bought the space (well when they bought the space it was Mail Boxes ECT.) and the fans are long gone. Also, the store next to where the Subway is now has a Fasco Charleston in it and they just took off the blades because they said they got in the way of the Christmas tree. Sooner or later I will try to give them a hugger in exchange for it and say it won't get in the way of their decorations.

If you have Dairy Queens in your area (the original ones, anyway, with the trademark buildings), you probably know they're a gold mine for vintage fans (especially in Texas.) Not in my area, although I did see one in Janesville with an SMC Laguna (52" cap on top). The ones near where I'm originally from have the small 3 blade Evergo's. I've also seen them with Blenderfans (Elm Mott), NuTones (Ft. Worth), Panasonics (Temple - but the fans are adios), SMC's (Plano) Which Evergos, Nutones, and SMCs? Can you get any of these fans? Seems very strange that ALL of them would be, especially given that I cant imagine any reason to de-blade the fans if you were not removing the lights. Fans can simply shut off. I've seen plenty of fans with only two blades, because one (of four) was damaged so they remove it and the opposing. Perhaps there's some command down from above (corperate headquarters) to remove fans and this is their cheap way of complying. In which case, grab all the cool fans you listed above!! Dan

Not very many of the DQ's in Pittsburgh have vintage fans in them... I thought it was odd, in all the traveling I've done I can only think of two DQ's with fans, the SMC I mentioned and one that has since been closed with some generic huggers. Always thought it was odd, because they had that 80s restaurant style that you always expected cool fans.

I don't try to get fans from buildings... I would rather see them in their "natural habitat" then take them for myself (especially since I live in an apartment.) The only reason I would ask about them is if I saw they were very recently taken down, or in the process of being taken down. IMHO, it's good to see the older fans still in use in the buildings than seeing some crap builder fan there, anyway.
The Nutones were Verandahs, I believe (although it was at least 10-15 years ago when I saw them). The SMC's were the standard Kmart 5-blade fans with the cane, from what I could tell. Like I said, the Evergos were the 36"? 3-blade fans with wall controls.
My guess with the "de-blading" is that it would be a command from whatever region controls the Dairy Queens on the I-45 corridor.

I don't try to get fans from buildings... I would rather see them in their "natural habitat" Give 'em to me I'll show you their "natural habitat"!!!! Seriously, it's a shame, these days no collectible fan is safe in it's natural Habitat, 99% are getting removed or replaced, and tossed out. Buildings are torn down and the fans are demolished with them. I usually try to get every cool fan I can in a commercial setting because you never know when the grim reaper wrecking ball/hampton bay/etc will come for it. Otherwise you'll turn around and they'll be gone forever. The only reason I would ask about them is if I saw they were very recently taken down, or in the process of being taken down. IMHO, it's good to see the older fans still in use in the buildings than seeing some crap builder fan there, anyway.[]/quote] True. But make sure you catch them before they come down. The Nutones were Verandahs, I believe (although it was at least 10-15 years ago when I saw them). The SMC's were the standard Kmart 5-blade fans with the cane, from what I could tell. Like I said, the Evergos were the 36"? 3-blade fans with wall controls. Very cool on the Nutones. I was asking which model Evergo, the Leslie Lockes with the wood blades? My guess with the "de-blading" is that it would be a command from whatever region controls the Dairy Queens on the I-45 corridor. I wonder what prompted it.

de-blading the fans is just bunk!
Something I could never figure out...
There was a DQ near my house that had 4 encon huggers, and removed them after 10 years of use. As I recall, they were never de-bladed.

I have two DQ's near me. ONe has three white 52'' coastal breezes and the other hads two fasco american spirits which replaced something even stranger. None of the fans have ever been de-bladed.

The old Dairy Queen in my city is abandon, it's next to where they are widening the roads. It was not a inside Dairy Queen, you order and pay at first window and pick up at the second window and sit down under there pourch and eat. No ceiling fans were ever in there as I can remember......

Every DQ I have been to (I live in Central Texas) has older fans from the early '80s. One of them replaced their ceiling fans with Hampton Bay huggers a few years back, which is interesting since the ceiling is at a 45 degree angle!

I used to have odd dreams about 6 blade JCPenney huggers installed on vaulted ceilings, I think it was taking place in a roller rink . . .

I'm not really sure. The fascos replaced something with a J-hook and the fan has an odd flat bell canopy (not commander electric). And I have also come across a DQ that had two gulf streams on a vaulted ceiling which replaced two first generation fasco charlestons. There were flat spots on the ceiling to mount the fans from. There was also a 44'' hunter coastal breeze in the back.
