I have a Hunter original, Model No: 23856-001, installed new in 1996, has reverse switch, Hunter 3 speed wall switch, and light kit installed. Checked and added a little oil about 2-3 weeks ago.
Yesterday I noticed it wasn't running. Turned it off and back on to high, and get a "HUMMM" from it. If I manually spin the blades it wil get a little RPM but NOT a normal speed. The blades turn freely with no resistance with no power.
Pulled the switch and have power, light kit works fine. I thought maybe the switch was bad. Happened to have a new Hunter 3 speed switch and installed it. Still wont run, still get a "humm". Called Hunter but didn't have exact model number so no help.
I decided to check reverse and with the switch on the fan in reverse, the fan seems to run fine on all 3 speeds. By the time I could get the model number off the top, Hunter was closed. Called this morning and got an overseas help desk.
After a few dozen "yes/no" questions, she said fan was bad and would require replacement. I don't believe that.
Any suggestions? Places to get parts if there is a fix.
Thanks James

I have a fan hobby, like most of us on here. In other words, I am just your average fan collector.

That call center agent could not be more wrong. Your fan is not going bad. If it is only running properly in one direction but not the other. It probably needs a new reverse switch. Those can easily be purchased online. eBay would be my recommendation, just search Hunter ceiling fan reverse switch or something similar.
