Hello. I have a pair of Hunter Original fans on the ceiling of my front porch located just outside the beltway in Maryland. They've been there since I built the porch in 1987. Every year, in the fall, I take the blades off and wrap the motors in a plastic bag. This year one of the fans decided not to work. It spins freely. When I operate the switch, I can feel it trying and hear a hum that diminishes with each pull. Is the fan shot? Is there a part I can replace? Thanks in advance.

First make sure that the reverse switch is not in the middle. It might take multiple tries to get it working. Still doesn’t work? Check and see if it still hums with the reverse switch in the middle, and if it’s the case it’s a reverse switch or run winding issue. If it doesn’t hum at all with the reverse switch in the middle, it’s a capacitor issue or start winding issue. The capacitor should be 7.5uf.

Most likely the capacitor needs replacing. What model is the fan?

I tried the switch in the middle and no hum. The brass tag has 011130 in the right corner. Where is the capacitor located? Thanks!!

I'm not sure where the model number would be found. I did some searching and it looks like the capacitor is zip tied to the top of the housing. I'll take the fan down this weekend, get it apart and snap some photos. Is there anything I should be careful not to do during disassembly? Any advice is appreciated. Everyone have a great Memorial Day weekend.

The capacitor should be in the switch housing or in the motor housing, probably the switch housing. Remove the switch cap and see if the capacitor is there. If not, remove the bottom plate, then windings to get access to the capacitor.
