This is my first post.
We just purchased a house and included was this fan. There are no visible identifiers on the fan itself but the 5 speed control box has "UNION" printed on it. It also has what I believe is a capacitor and by judging everything else in the home, I would guess it was installed in the 1980s. Side note, the capacitor gets extremely hot during operation. Thank you everyone in advance.

That is a Union ceiling fan. The "Capacitor" is a Transformer that changes fan speeds. You cannot use the fan without it, so if you take it down make sure to keep the control with the fan! They never really had a name for the fan since they were import models by small companies. So the only thing that really identifies the name of this fan is with a model number ontop of the motor.

Actually you can use it as a single speed without the speed control box, or use a capacitor based speed control instead of this one, which is NOT capacitor based.
If it works, I would leave it alone. Hot is normal.

Thank you for the quick replies. Transformer, not capacitor. Noted! 😊
It is good to know hot in normal because everything in my brain was saying otherwise. Thank you all again.
