I have a Casablanca Delta Model 10777 , manufactured April 1983, with an Emerson K55AMBHT-9210 motor. It makes an irregular tapping noise at all speeds. It makes the sound when I rotate the blades by hand. I removed the fan and opened the housing. It makes the sound when I spin the flywheel by hand, the only difference now is that it makes a regular sound at a particular position of the flywheel. It doesn't make the sound when I spin it in reverse. I'm not sure where to go next. I really like this fan - it's been in the family for 35 years - but the tapping noise is intolerable.

Make sure that the flywheel hasn't slid down the motor shaft; if it has, then the bottom of the flywheel will rub against the top of the switch housing.

There's a good gap between the flywheel and switch housing. It sounds more like it's coming from the motor. Would a bad bearing make a tapping noise? Attachment Deleted

Whoa a brown Casablanca Delta, Neat! I know there is a collector experiencing the same problem with his Casablanca as well. It is probably a bad bearing.

Well, I took it all apart, even managed to remove the bottom bearing, but really boogered up the dust cover in the process. I couldn't feel or hear anything wrong with the bearing when I turned it. The grease looked it's age but there was plenty in there. I didn't change the grease because I might have done more harm than good since I don't know what kind of grease to use. I just tapped the dust cover back into shape as best I could and put the bearing back.
I reassembled the fan and reinstalled it. No sound. Maybe there was something in the motor housing that fell out without me knowing it. Maybe tomorrow it will start tapping again. Hopefully, it will run silent for another 35 years.
