Hey guys new here, I bought a house built in 05, and in the living room is a Hampton Bay 897f. The fan has 2 light systems one on the bottom and one on top. The bottom system works fine however I can not seem to get the top system to work. The bulbs are good but nothing seems to work any suggestions?

Hi MGill,
Welcome to VCF.
The fan you have is a Hampton Bay Bali, which was one of Home Depot's higher-end offerings at the time. Since these fans are remote-based, I would start there. (Often) the built-in receiver can fail, buttons on the handheld transmitter can wear-out and so on. Its also possible that the up-light wiring assembly may no longer be electrically intact. Sockets and wiring connections can degrade over time, especially if somebody installed bulbs which exceed the listed wattage.
I hope this helps,
Max

Hello MGill, I second all of what Max said, above this comment. I want to expand on that a little; your Hampton Bay Bali ceiling fan is a very slightly altered variant of two ceiling fan models sold by a company titled "Minka Aire": the Delano, and the Volterra, both of which, I believe, have the same uplight your fan has. The full function control system (which seems to be the main issue here) that Minka Aire uses with those particular models should work with what you have here.
Regards, Noah

Hampton Bay Bali doesn't actually have a built-in remote system. I should know because I saw one and it has separate wall switch for fan and light, so Bali just has receiver inside canopy, which wasn't installed on one I saw so one I saw only runs on high.
You can order a new receiver at The Home Depot. Hampton Bay Bali is discontinued, but it still sells Hampton Bay Rhodes which looks about the same and even has the same remote.
