it started about five days ago when the habor breeze classic 36 inch fan started screeching from the bearings, so I went to look at a new fan for our dining room which is 9 by 12 feet, so I went to look at home depot and lowes to look for a new fan, and what would usually take about 10 mins to choose a fan turned into two days. the reason why it did is because what used to be 42 inch fans have now become 44 inch fans which would have been too large for the room ( the largest fan that fits the room is 42 inches) and all they had were 42 inch huggers, which I did not want. I tried to get a hunter downrod fan for the room, but even though the box said the fans flush mount, I found out when I opened the box, that the canopy was not drilled for flush mount, so that had to be returned, and on the second day I decided to go to our local habitat and there I found a white 42 inch four blade panama vent landmark, which originally had a bowl light kit with two candle base bulbs, for 15 bucks, so I got that and put it in the dining room. also I ditched the bowl light and went to home depot and picked up a white three light turtle fitter for it which takes medium base bulbs (comes with compact fluorescent light bulbs) and even though they are 40 watt equivalments, the room is brighter then it was with the candle base bulbs.
the point of the story is that newer 42 inch fans are getting harder to find

You are right about 42" fans. Unless you can get something vintage go on Amazon and get a Hunter Beacon Hill or move up 2" and get a Minka Aire Supra. Quality with airflow.
The stuff at Home Depot IS a joke. Not even from a quality or appearance standpoint, just from a performance standpoint anymore. I stood under a Farmington the other day and literally thought how is the EPA can ban this that and the other for energy performance but then they are willing to allow something burning 40 watts of power that has no purpose because its not moving air. Its just circulating pieces of particle board and cheap blade irons.

I personally don't like to think of a fan being too big for a room unless the blades are going to touch the wall. Who else would let 2 extra inches bother them?
We have a 52" Landmark Plus installed in a small bedroom in our house, and it hasn't been a problem.

In our case, the blades on the 44 inch would come extremely close to the beam that is separating the dining room and the living room

Makes sense. In their old house, my grandparents had this 52" Craftmade CXL in the eat-in kitchen. The blades were extremely close to the hanger for that plant in front of the window. In this case, a smaller fan would've looked better.

What a freakshow.. That's odd that they're eliminating the 42" size.. Never noticed,, don't really pay attention to what comes out now but that is very strange..

here is a picture of the situation, the bottom of the beam is in the top of the picture, and the fan blades are about 2 feet from the back side of the beam Attachment Deleted

The only thing wrong about fan being too large for the room is that blades would be so close to the wall that it would not have much space for air to flow around.

Eliminating the 42" size and switching to 44" is what he was saying. I know.. That was a type-O in my post..
