As I have mentioned other times, my university has a Subway on campus with 5 Regency MX Excels in the main part of the restaurant, and a Pro Series in a room with extra seating. When I first started attending the university, 3 of 5 MX Excels still had their pull chains. During this school year, 2 of those 3 fans lost their pull chains, one after the other. Before one fan lost its chain, the chain was swinging around from the fan's wobbling. I ask, is it possible for a pull chain to fall off if it swings around a lot? The pull chain speed settings have not changed on those fans, and they are all believed to be controlled on the same 3-speed wall control. And these fans are so high up that you'd need a ladder to reach the chains.

You said once that one chain went to low, then back to high so somebody sometimes do get the ladder out. Is that the fan that still has the chain?
Someone could have noticed the chain swinging and may have removed it.

That fan is the one that still has the chain, but that was during last school year when the chain went to low and back to high, and those other two fans still had their chains.
But I would find it very unlikely that they cut off the chain for that reason, as it isn't a hazard of any type, especially being as high as it is off of the ground.

I was just thinking that some people may have find chain swinging annoying, since some people are different. Or it helped them notice that chain is still there and they may wanted to remove that chain. But I also find it very unlikely for chain to fall off from swinging, so there are other possibilities as well.

The chains are comprised of cheap soft metal.. Its convincible in my mind that after years and years of motion, the metal could either wear down and let go, or break from flexing..

I should mention that at least on the two fans that lost their pull chains recently, there's still just a tiny bit sticking out of the "nut."

I didn't think pull chains could break from Wobbling around… can they?

Yup.. welcome to the 21st century, where fans are built to fall apart. You got that right, especially these Regency MX Excels. Seems like most of their Subway installs are messed up somehow, having bent blade arms and broken pull chains in a lot of cases, and even the switch and motor housings can be crooked.

Its a shame they're in such bad condition.. Regency makes a decent fan..
