Is there any way to get the cane lighter? Or is that the color it originally was

Still debating if I should take the switch housing off, and the blade irons down to get replated.. I've never understood the logic of possibly paying hundreds of dollars to replate parts of a fan that probably cost $30-40 new and has no notable increase in value, but to each his own... The place I took the SMC A52 is doing it for $250.. There was another place literally blocks away from this place, and I went there first and they wanted $350.. Then I went to the second place and I mentioned they wanted 350 for fan parts to be replated for a fan that's not even worth $50 at the other place, then I said can you work with me here, I don't expect to pay that low, but 350 is just waaaay too much for something that's not even worth the fraction of 350.. I said maybe around the 200 range, then he said he'll do it for 250, and I think that's even still way too high, I then asked him why so much, he mentioned it's so hard to get anything to stick to pot metal, The bottom GE vent grill happens to be steal on the SMC.. Next time I go and get my parts back I'm going to tell him (the owner), I've got other fan parts that need replated, if you can do even cheaper that I'll be a returning customer.. When I was there last week to put more money down, I mentioned to the lady behind the desk why is it so much for something like this to be replated but yet this product sold for way less. then she mentioned that the original manufacturers of products like this that are plated with brass etc, are plated with nickel and then a brass coat on top, then a clear coat to protect, and is only guaranteed to last only 10 years by the manufacturers.. She than mentions The way they plate is different and suppose to last a very long time, and they also plate yachts and expensive vehicles.. I suppose these places are used to making big bucks for bigger and more expensive things..

Wow that's a lot of money for something like that replated, I understand their job would be better quality and last longer than the original, but it better last a life time for that price sheesh.

Well, if you can't get them re-plated, I would just polish them and make them chrome.

Brass spraypaint covered with a clearcoast looks indistinguishable to the original plated finishes. There are a lot of parts in the museum done this way and no one has been able to tell the difference.
What they are telling you is correct. Most fan companies didnt use true brass plating, but something that looked the appropriate color.

There's been many times I've pealed off the brass coating from fans and the nickel plating is basically showing.. I could have left fans with more of a chrome look that way, but I'd rather original.. Companies nickel plated, then used some sort of clear coat that's a brownish/yellowish color which makes the nickel plate look polish brass... I've tried brass spray paint following clear coat, and tried it numerous of times.. If anything it makes the brass spray paint look more yellowish, then of course glossy.. It doesn't look anything like a polish brass, or even metallic like the cap on the spray paint can...

One of these blade brackets was painted with brass spray paint. No clearcoat. Can you tell which one?
Hint: The bottom part of the canopy was too.

It may blend well when touching up and hiding bad areas in the original finish in small areas where there is already brass to blend with it, I've even had great results in doing that, I've even blended a touch of black or grey (Can't exactly remember) mixed with brass to touch up antique brass finishes, and the results were great.. Try refinishing a whole fan with that brass spray paint, I bet you will be dissatisfied, Unless you don't mind the the way that paint looks.. I have a whole GE vent fan that needs brass replated, and I did give the whole thing a coat of brass spray paint, and I was completely dissatisfied.. Tried numerous of things, including following up with a clear coat.. I must have wasted two cans of brass paint.. No matter what I did, I could not get any kind of (Mirror) reflection or anykind of simulation of polish brass.. Sure, the colors are close but without the metallic reflection it looks very odd..
Another Example: That all Brass New Fan I got from Craigslist and paid $25 for, about a year ago, which had a beautiful polish brass finish to it, and literally looked brand new.. I left it running in the garage all night and day, and the garage gets well over 100 degrees out there in the middle of a summer day.. Well I came out to the garage the following day, turned off the fan, and noticed the brass finish was cracking in areas, and ended up having to peal off the whole finish on the bottom half of the motor.. It looked chrome in that area while the rest of the fan looked polished brass, I then spray painted the bottom half of the fan with brass paint.. The results were bad.. Needless to say, I gave the fan to Matthew..

You have to remember, a fan looks very different hanging from the ceiling than it does up close. My goal, even for videos, is "does it look good when hung"?

Se we see here another example of a fan with a very slow reverse. Dan had an explanation for it that had nothing to do with avoiding a draft... I don't remember if it was in a thread or a video though.

These tats tend to be a bit slower in reverse, but this is probably the slowest reverse I've ever seen..

Whoa that's really special. It's like an actual low speed on reverse.
