Hello, I have a 1998 Hunter Original and the capacitor went bad. I replaced it with a 7.5 mfd. The fan will not start now with out a spin of the blades. Can anyone help?

How did you confirm the original capacitor was bad?

If you replaced the cap with an identical one (since these have a 7.5 in them) and it still doesn't spin without starting it by hand, then it isn't the capacitor. How did it perform before you swapped the capacitor?

The fan is on a covered screen porch. About 3 years ago, one of my grandsons would like to see the fan start and stop and he would turn the fan on and off from the wall switch over and over. Eventually the fan stopped working. Recently, I took it apart and found the Capacitor badly swelled up and I changed it. I did not see any other obvious damage although the inner windings are a little discolored. When I took the fan apart, I clipped the wires to the switches and then wire nutted them back together when I reassembled the fan. Once it is spinning, I can change the speeds and I can reverse it by thowing the switch and spinning it the other direction.

Can you also reverse it by spinning it by hand the other way without throwing the switch?

Yes, I can reverse it with the reverse switch in either position.
