I highly recommend that you leave the stator in place because they are precisely set in place so that the rotor will not come in contact with it. If you want to strip the paint off use a paint stripper but make sure the stator is covered.

While I've never pulled apart an Original, I've removed other stators before and its quite a pain to get it back in exactly the right place so that the rotor doesn't collide with it. There's so little space between the two if its just slightly off you have a disfunctional motor...I'd say only remove it if you absolutely needed to.

Original stators aren't THAT difficult to pull out. I know this because I've done it several times without issue.
The stator is held in place with poured lead in seven places. In order to remove the stator, the stator bolts need to be undone and it needs to be pried out a little bit at a time in a circular motion with a large flat-tip screwdriver. If any of the lead fillings come loose and fall out, they and their places must be marked accordingly. When you hammer the stator back in, make sure it goes in at the exact same place it came out from.. that shouldn't be overly difficult.
This is all easier than it seems.
