With prices that obscene, the Habitat should also have YEARS added to the dates on their big fancy signs.. because they WILL sit there for that long.

Is it just me, or are the prices at this one outrageous? $60 for an Infinity that they probably got for free? How is that resale/thrift price? I'd love to have a word with the manager about that. YES. My Habitat goes in phases of doing this, right now they've been pretty reasonable again but I've seen cheap generic stuff at $30 and Hunters at $45+. I'm hearing it's come to the point that some Habitats either want to make that much profit on the fans, otherwise they'll just throw them in the scrap bin and get minimum return for them that way. Very sad, but it's happening. I guess I'd rather see them sit there overpriced than as scrap metal, but they SHOULD have the date when the fan went onto the sales floor on it so that when it's sat there for three months the customer can be allowed to haggle for half price or something.

I think they are doing that to piss me off.. There isn't any other items in the store where they have fancy price tags and write details about it.. Looks like what they are doing is, anything that has a famous label like Hunter, they put out on the shelf, or anything that looks fancy, and toss anything else out they think is plain looking or ugly.. Like anything else, it will be a faze until they get a proper manager, that fan section isn't going to make enough money for the amount of effort they are trying to put into it....

I think if the Habitat has a knowledgeable fan person that is making a conscious effort to restore all fans to as close as perfect running and cosmetic condition as possible, and can display them running at all times they are for sale on the floor, they have the right to charge those kind of prices. I usually went $20-30 on generics that were in top shape, to $40-50 for your vintage Casablancas or equivalent in decent shape, to between $60-75 for lighting store brands or the most recent high-end Hampton Bays, to upwards of $100 for Hunter Originals, and I'd get that too because customers would see that the fans were in like-new condition. Smaller fans, builderfans in less than perfect shape, or any lower-end fans when we had a surplus would likely go for between $15 and $25. Heck I even built a few Frankenfans from matching parts I had lying around and got them out the door for more than Habitat would get for scrap metal (of course I double- and triple-checked to make sure everything fit perfectly and was safe).
All this is to say, if they have no way to show the fans running, and especially if they just throw them all in a pile, they have no reason to expect to sell them at anywhere NEAR these prices. I'd say I probably had to do a cap swap on AT LEAST one out of every ten fans that came through the door.

IMO used fans at a restore, tested and working, should be 25-30% of retail price. NIB fans should be 50% of retail price. Untested fans should be $5-15.

Right... they just try to make a profit, which makes me mad... they want people to come in who want to save money buying used, yet, they charge the same prices as cheaper newer fans, sometimes more. I got 6 Infinitis for FREE. Not only save money, but people who can't afford a new fan go there. Just to find fans that cost even more than a new one, and they're used at that, that's just dumb.

They would probably make more money selling each fan for 10-15 dollars than getting scrap value for them, which isn't all that much. I assume most of the fans they get are donated, so they get them for free. If they sell it for $15, that's strait profit for them, and its fast. Selling the fans at $50 or more, of course they're not going to sell, the audience the store is targeting can't afford that!

Right, that's the point of a restore, for it to be cheap and affordable. People would buy untested fans at $5, if it doesn't work, then you're not out much anyway.

While I doubt they are targeting you specifically , they could be trying to deter collectors in general. But their way of doing that isn't going to help their intended audience anyway, so that kind of cancels out the point. All we can do is complain to them and hope they get a better management. This seems to be a pretty constant problem at the stores, is there any "main store" that they all operate under which has management that controls them?

Its really outrageous to run a restore like that.
