Also if I do have to buy the conversion kit ($49) is it worth fixing the old fan, when I can buy a new fan (Hunter) for around $80?? No, no, no. $49 is nothing to fix a Casablanca that is much higher quality than any Hunter that you can buy today. Especially a Hunter that is not an Original. Hunters have spinner motors, the Casablanca has a stack motor. Always a big difference!

Yes, I forgot that part. It's definitely worth fixing.

Ok, what about the wall control kit that was mentioned?? Is that a good option?

The 3 speed conversion is a better option. The wall control will be more complicated (you have to bypass the internal speed control and then add the receiver), AND it will cost almost as much.

As I said, I think it's the best option. You can try calling the number on www.casablancafanrepair.com and see if they sell it cheaper than the link I gave you. And, as many have said, this fan is definitely worth investing into fixing. It's very well made, other than the speed control.

I called Casablanca and they have the kit for $33......but it does not have instructions. The link you gave me says it includes instructions (but is $49) Is there much to making the conversion?

I dont believe so. You unplug the wires from the circuit board, remove the circuit board, install the new circuit board, and plug SOME of the wires back in. You'll also need to remove the speed dial.
If you're at all questionable about it, $16 isnt a lot to spend for piece of mind.

Couldn't this control be rebuilt with a bit of quality time at the workbench? I'd imagine it's similar to a light dimmer in that it "chops up" the AC voltage going to the motor. Repairs could be made with off the shelf electronic components and you could test it on a fan/motor with similar specs to make sure nothing is going to go up in smoke. If anyone has a dead one kicking around, I'd be happy to take a look at it.

It could, but it is much more quiet and reliable to just use capacitors for distinct stepped speeds. That's why all manufacturers phased out the variable speed controls.

I have an early 80s variable speed Zephyr. The wall control died, not hte fan motor or assembly. Anybody have an old wall control they would like to part with? Avoids have to reconfigure to 3 speed.

A solid state fan speed control should be readily available at Lowe's or Home Depot. Shouldn't cost you more than $10. Just be sure you get one specifically designed for ceiling fans, as a light dimmer could be harmful to the motor.

Is it an InteliTouch control with 3 buttons, or a dial control?

I have a Casablanca Zephyr 1444T over our kitchen table. I had to shut the power off at the breaker to install a new light fixture over the island in the kitchen. The job is complete. The new light works great but the fan doesn't. The fan won't come on. The light won't either. When I turn the power on I hear nothing but the when I turn it off I hear a barely perceptible sound, perhaps a relay, from the fan itself. I'm guessing that means some signal is getting to the fan. Any ideas what may be wrong or how to fix it?
