Does anyone here remember the Sears catalogs? I can remember as a kid we had the Sears Wish Book from 1992 and I looked at the toys in that all the time. LOL And some of the other Sears catalogs too, I remember looking at the ceiling fans and portable fans. After they quit the Sears catalog we would get the tool catalogs that were like magazines and I'd look at the shop vacs and stuff in there.
I wish stores still sent out circulars too, it seems like we don't get as many these days. I do look through the Home Depot and Lowes ones, sometimes.
I don't remember actually going to Sears actually all that often. We had an appliance and catalog store in our town but I have no memory of it at all. I can vaguely remember going to the one in Lakeland once which was a full store. After we moved here there was a small Sears that sold appliances, electronics, tools, and vacuums and we went there sometimes which I always enjoyed. Then they built the larger department store in the mall.
My mom always used to talk about going to Montgomery Ward when I was a toddler and I got upset and started throwing a tantrum. LOL But I have no recollection of Montgomery Ward at all either.
All those Sears have sadly closed. The closest one I know of is in the Florida Mall in Orlando. The Montgomery Wards and that whole mall in Lakeland went out of business and became a huge Church called "Church at the Mall" where some of my cousins go.
Another store we went to was the Scotty's in my town then. It had an open style ceiling and there were huge belt driven fans in the roof I remember. There was a display with the exhaust fans, back then they all had switches you could turn on and hear them running, so I made my mom lift me up so I could press the buttons. I remember the one with the round plastic grille I climbed up and took the cover off so I could see the blades. LOL The one after we moved here had the huge round HVAC vents in the ceiling. They sold Encon ceiling fans and a few cheaper Hunter models. I still have the Hunter and Vornado catalogs I got back then. They sold Duracraft and Lakewood portable fans.
There was also an ACE Hardware there no fans that I remember but it had HUGE square HVAC vents in the ceiling, the biggest I've ever seen. It's still there. The ACE here had two Emerson Designer Series plastic fans in white, one hanging at the back over the plumbing department and the other was closer to the front on a higher ceiling. That one got removed at some point and was just the down rod. In fact I'm not sure I remember it ever being there, the other one was always on that I remember.
We also used to go to a store on main street called Ben Franklin. It was really old and had the square paper ceiling tiles and huge round silver HVAC vents. I remember the restroom was so old it had a wood panel door with a skeleton key style door knob. The front of the store was plate glass with two sets of old storefront style doors. I think Ben Franklin closed down around 1995 or 96. There was also another old storefront there that had tin ceilings and those schoolhouse globe style light fixtures. I'm not sure why we went in there but it looked like and old drug store straight out of the 1950s or something and had sat for decades.
There was a craft store and art studio there on a corner my mom used to go to as well. It also had the paper ceiling tiles and round vents. Some kind of PB ceiling fans with 5 blades on long down rods. There was an old lady that used to sit in a wooden rocking chair in there all the time knitting and she always had a Galaxy desk fan with blue blades on the floor blowing at her whenever we went.
Oh the things I remember. LOL
