I find it surprising that in the U.K. cane is a dime a dozen... seems they appreciate "Old-Fashioned" stuff more than we do... More there than in other places you find?

I know this may seem a bit obvious, but did rattan and stencil blades die off around the same time as cane?

Nope, stencil died off a lot sooner... after the mid-90s (c. 1995) you didn't see stencil as much anymore... I think the demise of places like Payless Cashways, Hechinger's (a regional hardware store chain), Ames, and similar discount stores also marked the demise of stencil-bladed fans.
