I have a Vornado/Bersted that I got a few days ago. I took off the cage but now am in need to take off the bladeset. There is a single set screw holding the blades on. Not too hard, right? Think again. The set screw just doesn't want to come out of there. I tried oil, it didn't work. Please help, I want to get the blades nice and clean.

What type of oil are you using?

I tried 3 in 1 motor oil (the same oil I use for the bearings) but it didn't work.

I tried 3 in 1 motor oil (the same oil I use for the bearings) but it didn't work. It is very important that if you use 3 in 1 oil in the bearings, it needs to be non-detergent, the blue can. As far as the set screw goes, you need to get some penetrating oil, the 3 in 1 likely won't do much. Be careful to prevent the penetrating solution from entering the motor or the bearings.

There might be something not allowing the set screw to disconnect, like in my 4" Massey.

A bit of an update: I didn't have any penetrating oil so I used a drop or two of WD40. I tilted the fan head down so as no have any WD40 get in the front bearing. I let it sit there for about 5 min and then tried to loosen the screw. It still won't come off! And I'm a little scared to push it too hard because it is a little stripped. Ugh.

The WD 40 isn't the worst thing to use, but a drop for 5 minutes of any oil isn't going to do it. You need to really soak it from all angles, let it sit for a while, soak it again, let it sit, try getting it to move..... If its a little stripped, make sure you're using a bit that's exactly the right size to prevent any further stripping. There might be something not allowing the set screw to disconnect, like in my 4" Massey. What is this something you speak of? I've never heard of that, especially in a tiny desk fan...

try WD40. spray it around were its stuck. and let it set overnight. it should soak it up and make it come out easy. same if the blade is stuck to the shaft. but DO NOT! use WD-40 for the motor bearings.

Update: I tried soaking in the wd40 overnight but it didn't work. I don't think I'll be able to get this blade screw out, and if I can't that's okay. Also, don't worry I absolutely never use any other oil in fan bearings other than 3in1 motor oil.

Normally if i cant get the blade off. i just clean around it. not as practical. but it does the job. 3 in1 is good as long as you use the blue can. and not the red one.

may try to use a hair dryer or soldering iron and heat it up... that may do it
